Canadian cyclist missing near Vancouver

By BikeRadar

Canadian cyclist Daniel Hughes was last seen on June 5th going on a cycle run in Vancouver, British Columbia and he hasn't been seen since. His family has asked for help in finding the 29-year-old.

Hughes is cousin to BBC Scotland journalist Graham Mitchell. According to Hughes' family, it's not in his character to disappear, there's no history of depression or drug use, and they fear something bad has happened to him while out on his bike.

"Daniel is probably somewhere in the Vancouver area, and we feel it is in character that he may have gone to the North Shore or other forested or mountainous places," Mitchell said. "He was riding a distinctive bicycle (a yellow Marinoni road bike with red decals.

"He would have likely ridden on paved roads or easy trails, but he may have gotten off his bike and walked. If he had a bike accident and went off the road, he could be hidden in bushes," he added.

Mitchell is asking Vancouver readers of BikeRadar to help by putting up posters and keeping an eye out. Hughes was last seen 8:15 a.m., Friday, June 5.

Hughes is a Caucasian male, 6'2" tall, 180 pounds, with short brown hair, blue/green eyes and facial stubble.

"Specifically, ways to help find Daniel are: put up posters in southwestern BC, walk in Vancouver, walk trails and good cycling routes on the North Shore and other places in the Vancouver area.

"Please be extremely safe! If in doubt, don't go, and pass this information on to others," Mitchell added.

If you see or have seen Daniel, or a bicycle matching this description, please call Vancouver police at (604) 717-3321.

Searchers scour forest for missing Vancouver man

Last Updated: Saturday, June 13, 2009 | 12:10 PM PT

Search-and-rescue crews combed the forest on the lower slopes of a North Shore mountain Saturday, looking for a Vancouver man missing for eight days.

Daniel Hughes, 29, has not been seen since June 5, when it's believed he went for a bike ride and didn't return home.

Police got their first clue as to his whereabouts Friday after his bicycle and helmet were found locked to a tree on Mount Seymour in North Vancouver.

"A dog walker…found his bike locked against a tree and off the beaten path. It's a bit peculiar, but it tells us maybe that he didn't want to be spotted going into these trails," said Sgt. Kirk Star of the Vancouver Police Department.

He said Hughes disappeared just three weeks after getting married, and was facing increasing pressure at work.

"Locking his bike is a good sign, assuming he wants to come back to it. Maybe he just needs some time away."

Star said witnesses first saw the bike last Saturday, one day after Hughes was reported missing.

The rescue team includes 25 search and rescue members on the ground with several dogs, a police helicopter, and kayakers searching the shores of the Seymour River.

Hughes is a Caucasian male, six feet two inches tall, 180 pounds with short brown hair.

Vancouver police are asking anyone with information to call 604-717-3321.

  • I do hope they find him soon. Feel for his family ...

  • That is why everytime I go on a bike ride, I have them all saved on a MyRides folder by name, and before leaving will tell others which ride I am taking and/or also call from my cell phone while riding my bike, more so if is a new bike trail and if I am riding by myself.

its sad to hear stories like this, it is very easy to lose awareness of your surroundings, two weeks is scary a lot of time to be "lost", my prayers go to his family.
