BikeRadar verdict
"Stylish and functional geared urban machine"
One of our team described Bionicon’s Urban Road as a “fun pub bike”. He was right in that the Urban is a good pub bike, but there’s more to it than that; it’s certainly fun, but it’s not just a machine you take down your local for a few jars.
It’s tough, stripped down and basic, about as minimalist as it’s possible to get and still have gears. And while singlespeed and fixed bikes are massively popular in cities these days, most people still want gears.
The Urban has nine of them, which are changed by a flick of the SRAM bar-end shifter. It’s a simple setup, but changing gear in this position does take a bit of getting used to.
The bars are a pared-down time trial affair and, combined with the short top tube and ultra-short stem, make for a very upright riding position. The end result is an aggressive-handling bike that you can throw through traffic with ease.
The Urban’s frame and forks are both chromoly, with neat welds throughout, and the paint job is an understated matt green that Bionicon call olive. The frame and forks are made in Taiwan, with the bike assembled in Germany, closer to Bionicon’s European markets.
Like the rest of the Urban Road, the 700C wheels go for strength over glamour, built from Shimano Parallax hubs, Alex rims and Schwalbe’s Kojak tyres.
If you’re not familiar with the latter, they’re a light(ish) pair of bald slicks – hence the Seventies detective’s name – with Schwalbe’s RaceGuard protection belt that grip road surfaces well.
Throw that all together and you get a wheelset well suited to tough urban use – the 700C wheels ride better over poor surfaces than smaller diameter ones and the tyres’ 35mm width takes the sting out of bumps.
The Urban doesn’t come with mudguards, but there’s plenty of clearance between the tyres and frame for them, and there are mounting bolts, as there are for a rear rack, so you can easily carry kit. However, given the frame’s tight geometry, you could well suffer toeclip overlap if you did fit mudguards.
In spite of its apparent minimalism, the Urban offers quite a lot. All in all, this is yet another interpretation of what a good city-specific bike could look like.
Manufacturers description
For speedy transportation to work without traffic jams or parking stress, or for the detour via the swimming pool there's no more effective tool than a racing bike. The time trial inspired handlebars are comfortable and give great handling at high speeds. A unique combination of bar end gear levers and powerful brakes guarantees quick shifting and braking. The classic steel frame can be fitted with mudguards and carriers.

"it’s not just a machine you take down your local for a few jars."
How do you get it home again after "a few jars" ?

beware, getting done for 'drunk in charge of a bicycle' can get you points on your drivers liscence (if you have one). That said, lovely looking bike though it looks more of a lager machine than a real ale wobbler.

what nonsense fireball.
You cannot get points on your licence here in the UK.
There are no offences that carry penalty points for cyclists.

You can't (any longer) have points removed from your driving license for an offense committed on a bicycle. Or on foot.
However, you CAN have your driving licence suspended for an offence committed on a bicycle. And that, most frequently involved alcohol-related offences.
If you don't have a driving licence, your right to drive can still be removed (so, in essence, you can't apply for a licence during the period of suspension).

"In a slightly more wobbly line than you rode to the pub in dreamlx10!"
Snarf, snarf, it's not wrong because you're on a bike, but if you were in a car well that would be different !

With that spec I suppose half the price might make it a resonable buy!
The bars look like a mis-placed style statement with the shifter an after-thought bodge.

I cycled home in a wobbly line from the pub on Saturday. I clipped the kerb and executed a perfect Superman dive. I have no skin on the lower palms of either hand or my right knuckles or my left shoulder or knee and have two hilarious patches of gravel rash on the left side of my face.
Mrs Trousers was not pleased when I arrived home (walking with bike in tow.) She was most concerned about me bleeding on the sheets though!
The best bit is that I cannot shave, consequently look like a thug and no-one wants to sit next to me on the train so I get a seat to myself.
Drink and ride, you know it makes sense.

Yes, I had 5 stitches in my chin due to alcohol related crash - I grew a beard in response. It was that 7th pint of Stella that did it! As I said, stick to bitter.
I rather liked the handlebars.
