Halfords have launched the Carrera Zelos Junior road bike (£249.99) for kids and teenagers aged 11 to 14 years keen to copy Tour de France heroes such as Chris Froome and Sir Bradley Wiggins.

The 41cm, alloy-framed bike uses 14-speed Shimano Tourney gears with compact 48/34T chainrings on the front, Tektro dual pivot brakes and 650c wheels. Weight – a crucial consideration for bikes that young legs have to power – is claimed to be 10.9kg. The age range the Zelos Junior is aimed at means it will compete with the 10.2kg Islabikes Luath 700 (£499.99), which BikeRadar gave a rare five-star review to.

Karen Bellairs, head of cycles at Halfords, said the Zelos Junior "is especially designed for aspiring cycle stars, and is the ideal introduction to the world of road riding for youngsters dreaming of one day winning the Tour de France".
