British brand Kiddimoto has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of its first range of pedal bikes, offering discounts of up to 45 percent on RRP for early bird backers.

The company, founded in 2003, has produced a variety of balance bikes over the past decade-and-a-half enabling youngsters a first taste of cycling.

The Darwin is available in two sizes, 16-inch and 20-inch, aimed at 4–6 year-olds and 5–8 year-olds respectively. Both models are belt driven and equipped with Tektro front and rear brakes, with short reach levers for smaller hands.

The 20-inch model also features a three-speed Shimano Nexus internal hub gear.

Kiddimoto’s Darwin comes in brushed aluminium or cobalt blue for both sizes, and the 16-inch model has a claimed weight of 7kg, within a few hundred grams of Islabikes’ Cnoc 16 bike, while the 20-inch model is a claimed 8kg.

Other features include a quick release seatpost clamp for ease of setup and pneumatic tyres, with a ‘clotting agent’ sealant in the inner tubes to help prevent punctures.

Kiddimoto’s Kickstarter campaign went live on the 7 November and is looking to reach its goal of £10,000 by 7 December, but with the bikes' planned delivery in spring 2018 it’s a shame the bikes won’t be ready for Christmas.

We look forward to getting some suitable candidates on board the Darwin for a full review in the New Year.
