Sky's traffic-free cycling events for UK summer
Sky has announced a series of mass-participation cycling events to be held over the summer, encouraging Britons to ride their bikes more. According to research commissioned by Sky, over seven million bikes in the UK have not been used this year, instead lying neglected in sheds, gardens, garages and homes.
To help spread the message, Sky has recruited supermodel Elle Macpherson, Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton and Strictly Come Dancing winner Gethin Jones.
Victoria Pendleton said: “I was amazed that so many people are not using their bikes. Cycling is a great way to stay healthy and it’s good for exploring and meeting new people. My message is simple, get on your bike and join us at one of the fantastic free events Sky has planned.”
‘Skyride’ traffic-free city events will take place in Manchester (Sunday 2 August), Glasgow (Sunday 23 August), Leicester (Sunday 30 August) and London (Sunday 20 September). At these events, streets will be closed to traffic and there’ll be guided rides, open to all abilities of rider.
British Olympic stars Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and Jamie Staff will also attend the Skyrides.
Local Skyride events will
take place in around 400 towns across the
Ian Drake, Chief Executive of British Cycling said; “Through Sky’s nationwide campaign of organised rides this summer, our community and school programmes, and through building on last year’s activity, we have the chance to make a real difference to people's lives.”

Gethin wouldn't have had a look in if Boonen had done Strictly.
Boonen loves a bit of the cha cha cha!

Couldn't agree with you more....always a sporty girl over a prissy model anyday of the week! Although she'd probably make us all look a bit stupid when she'd speed past us. Ah well!

I'm afraid there's a few bikes in our garage that haven't been used for a year or three. OTOH there're some that have been used quite a lot.
However if Ms Pendleton was available as a stoker I could be tempted to get the tandem out again ... I wonder what SWMBO would think of that? Actually she'd take one look at me and another at VP and say "In your dreams, slob" :)

Looks nothing like Bellis.
He's a Blue Peter presenter.

Call me sad but I don't think Gethin Butler won Strictly, he was third.
