Clipped in

After 10 years spent riding flats Northern Ric is finally getting his disco slippers on…

When I was younger I rode BMX on flats (obviously) and when I got into mountain biking I sort of just went with them. I thought about clipping in a few times but never went in for it. You rode your bike everywhere and wearing a specific pair of shoes to do so just seemed a bit daft. Until now…

The combination of riding more XC and constant badgering from the rest of the office (Collins Boy being the main ring leader) has led me to give them a go.

I know, I know, I can hear the XC brigade grumbling and yes, ok, I am behind the times. Yes.

My Gary Fisher Hi-Fi Deluxe is the first ‘proper’ XC bike I’ve had and I’ve found on longer climbs and singletrack I’m moving my feet around on the pedals too much. It’s hard to settle on one position and the whole time I’m doing this I’m not concentrating on the climb and pedalling as efficiently as possible.

Time to hang up my trusty Vans Old School’s for a while then and get my clip on!

I’ve got myself a couple of pairs of disco slippers and a few different pairs of pedals and am off to a wide open, grassy space on Saturday to probably fall off a lot. Wish me luck…
