Nigel Smith and the Boardman he'll be using for the RAB Nigel Smith
Nigel Smith is taking part in the inaugural Deloitte Ride Across Britain after winning a competition in Cycling Plus. He's among 600 riders riding from John O'Groats to Lands End and aiming to raise £1M over four years for ParalympicsGB. We'll be following his progress throughout the event.
Up at 5:00 again to the pitter patter of raindrops. The clouds are swamping the hills with a slight drizzle but despite this everyone wanted to get going. We leave the Kyle of Sutherland over the Black Isle, down the Great Glen, past Loch Ness and then on to the basecamp at Fort William.
Throughout the day, the Boardman Carbon Pro shows real strength on the flat but downhill is where it’s at its best. It’s steady as a rock but responds when you need it to. A couple of the corners were a lot sharper and steeper than I thought, but the Boardman was a lot more fearless than me and took the bends easily. And its, fast; very fast, especially as I hare past much more exotic machines on the downhills. And the support from Halfords on the Deloitte Ride Across Britain before, during and after each stage is fantastic and they do it with a smile day and night. I don’t think that it’s something that I could do!
The final legs of the day along Loch Ness and down to Fort William were the best of the day. The rain stopped and I got into a great chain-gang with everyone taking their turn about two miles from the end we were overtaken by a fast moving group and I caught on. It was Rebecca Romero so I stayed with them to get the bragging rights! Yes, I cycled with Rebecca Romero today. 52 years old and still getting star struck...very sad!
Nigel was the winner of our Deloitte Ride Across Britain competition winning a place on the ride and a Boardman bike. Follow Nigel's journey throughout the week.
