Coach: Ben Simmons
Ben Simmons runs Elite Wales and his sponsored by Wiggle. He has been enlisted by Cycling Plus to ensure our team of riders are on top form for their cycling season and are able to achieve their goals.
Sam has been recovering form the Keswick Lakeland Challenge Sportive in the Lake District. He was using this event in preparation for the Dragon ride which took place this weekend. Not only this but Sam has really got in to time trialling and competed in his first ever 10 mile time trial. He recorded a time of 25:16 which is fantastic for his first ever attempt although Sam was aiming for a sub 25 minute time. This now gives him a target to beat and will have a better knowledge of how to pace himself during the longer time trials he is not used to.
Malcolm is progressing well although his work and family commitments are restricting the amount of time he has to train. I’m sure this is the same for all of us but Malcolm is pushing up his average speeds when he is riding so this is a good sign. I have also made some suggestions for alternative ways to keep active as Malcolm is away with work regularly. I have suggested things as skipping, jogging, swimming, doing a core stability work out or even having a good stretching session in front of the TV as it is better to do something than nothing!
Kay has been busy as per usual but still managing to fit in plenty of training. Kay has been doing all sorts of different sports and has joined up with weight watchers again as she feels she would like to loose a bit of weight. This is a great idea as meeting with a group gives you great motivation to stick to a diet and also make you a little bit competitive with the other people there. I do think that Kay should spend a little bit more time on the bike but then again I am a cycling coach and would be biased on this form of exercise.
Andy has been on holiday so I told him not to worry about training whilst out there in France and just enjoy the time off the bike as it would be good to allow your body to have some recovery time. But with Andy being Andy he couldn’t resist but stay active through his holiday and found that skipping was a really good work out for him. Andy will soon be back on the bike with a new found enthusiasm as we all do after having a bike break over a set period of time.
