What not to wear...

When I worked in London, my bike commute was a 32-mile round trip. This meant that kitting myself up in all the proper gear was essential. The move to Bath has somewhat drastically reduced my home/work distance - 2.5 miles if I go the long way.

For the first couple of weeks after relocation I'd slip into the same old habits and the same old cycling gear. Fully Lycra-d up and with Oakleys on I'd pootle in. But then I noticed that, although I had the shortest commute, I was the only person who bothered with bib shorts and a wicking jersey. Casually chatting to someone from BikeRadar I discovered that they prepared for a ride three times the length of mine simply by tucking their shirt in. Another staffer regularly cycles in in his dinner suit while one of the mountain bike bunch favours just a thong and a cheeky smile. So now I've bitten the bullet and do something I was always far to, ahem, cool to do - I tuck my trousers into my socks and ride!
