Catch Mark Cavendish on the BBC - if you can

Peter Cossins, Editor Tuesday, Mar 24, 2009 6.07pm

What next for Mark Cavendish after that phenomenal ride to victory in Milan-San Remo on Saturday that made him only the fourth rider in history to win ‘La Primavera’ on his debut? Well, how about a San Remo/scratch race/Madison triple - in a week?

After the euphoria of San Remo on Saturday, Cavendish and a very strong British team are now in Pruszkow, Poland for the World Track Champs, starting on Wednesday and running through to Sunday evening. Cavendish will be taking to the boards for the scratch event on Thursday evening, just after 6 pm UK time. He is due to team up with fellow Manxman Peter Kennaugh in the Madison on Saturday evening, when he will defend the title he won last year with Bradley Wiggins.

As it has done so often in recent years, the BBC will be providing extensive live coverage of the championships, starting on BBC2 on Wednesday evening. Those with access to the BBC’s red button technology can also see full coverage of the evening sessions on Wednesday to Friday.

And while we’re talking about track, a plug too for the London Six-Day, which organiser Tony Doyle says is “100 percent set” to take place on October 6-11 at a still be confirmed venue in the London borough of Newham. This is sure to showcase the talents of many of the British stars riding the Worlds and those looking ahead to the 2012 London Olympics.

London’s first six-day since 1980 is scheduled to be the first Six of the 2009/10 season and is likely to see first-time appearances of many of the sport’s top track stars in the country that hosted the first six-day races.
