Toughing it out Down Under

By Ellis BaconSo Procyclingâs in Australia for the first major race of the season, the Tour Down Under. Leaving the European winter behind has been a real hardship, as you can imagine.
I've been lucky enough to have been able to use up my remaining weekâs holiday from last year on seven days in Sydney prior to coming here to Adelaide, although many cycling friends of mine would say that my job is one long holiday anyway, chasing the pros around the world. My argument would be that if I wasn't able to take all my holiday last year, then I must have been working! And it is hard work most of the time, by the way...
But until the racing kicks off with the Down Under Classic criterium tomorrow, there has been a bit of time to relax. Inspired by the riders, I decided this morning that I'd better start my season, too, and went for a run in the absence of my own bike. In the lift, I bumped into Nicholas Roche - son of 1987 Tour de France winner Stephen - who suggested a route for me having been in town with his Credit Agricole team for a few days already. It was a good run, despite the heat, but I think he forgot that I was on two feet rather than two wheels. I'll be ready for the London Marathon when I get back at this rate.
