And it seemed like nine years' worth of rain came down on the riders and the following entourage on stage three between Stirling and Victor Harbor, although all 110 riders left in the race made it home to the seaside town without a spill between them.
The roadside crowds were still out in force, but if ever the term "drowned rats" was invented for anyone, it was them. One spectator was feeling even unluckier than me: "I took a day off today to come and watch the race, and it bloody-well rains," she laughed. "I'll go back to work tomorrow, and the sun will be shining again, and it'll be back to 40 degrees â I guarantee it."
Still, the Aussies could be happy with a stage win, as Unibet's Baden Cooke cruised home well ahead of Australia-UniSA's Chris Jongewaard, with new CSC signing Matt Goss third, making for an Australian one-two-three. And with another Australian, Karl Menzies, still in the ochre (that's sort of yellow) leader's jersey, things are looking quite bright for them.
