Cyclist critical after riding onto live rail

By Mark Appleton

A 47 year-old man remains in a critical condition after riding his bike off a railway platform at St Leonards Warrior Square Station in Hastings, East Sussex and falling onto an electrified rail.

The cyclist, who has not been named, is thought to have ridden his bike down steps and overshot the platform edge before striking his head on the 750 volt live rail.  He suffered severe burns which have been described as life-threatening.

According to the British Transport Police, the incident happened at 8.48am yesterday and was witnessed by both railway personnel and members of the public. Railway staff were able to rapidly turn off the electrical current and prevent trains from entering the station.  The man was transported to Conquest Hospital in St Leonards where he is currently being treated.

An eyewitness to the incident posting on a news website said: “It was not stupidity, but bad judgement and my understanding is that his brakes failed.”

  • " Breaking railway rules'" isn't the issue here , clearly someone that age should have known better , it sounds like he rode down the steps on the overbridge which are very steep and dangerous. Lets hope he makes a full recovery.

Really- His brakes failed...I've never been accused of being smart, but even I would never do something as outright stupid as that.

  • i see you removed both comments saying how stupid this guy was? why is that anyone that rides down steps is bloody stupid and breaking the station rules anyway.
