Scottish pupils to take part in Hands Up travel survey

Sustrans, the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity, will join forces with School Travel Coordinators to conduct a comprehensive survey of how Scottish children travel to school it was announced today.

The Hands Up survey is due to take place on the 8^th to the 12^th of September and encompasses 31 local authorities, giving the opportunity for around 700,000 students to talk about how they currently travel to school.

Sustrans has spearheaded a number of initiatives in recent years to encourage pupils to ride or walk to school. One of their most notable is the Safe Routes to Schools scheme, which is aimed at improving road safety, reducing child casualties and cutting down traffic congestion and pollution.

The feedback should highlight the effectiveness of the £10m of funding Sustrans has provided over the last three years, identifying the areas that have benefited most and those that Sustrans will target for future initiatives. 

Philippa Cochrane, Sustrans’ Manager for School Travel in Scotland, said: “I urge all schools to take part in the nationwide ‘Hands Up’ survey. With obesity, climate change and rising oil prices at the top of the agenda it’s crucial that we encourage young people to choose healthy and active ways of travelling to school that also benefit the environment.”
