Nutrition: More than nuts

A ‘healthy’ snack bar isn’t always as good for you as it makes out – but all you need to know is on the label, if you know what to look for (Paul Smith)
Grains, fruit and nuts are good for you, right? So cram them all into a bar and you get a powerful snack packed with wholesome fibre, carbohydrate, protein, essential oils and more, and you get a natural energy boost.
But sometimes the modern food industry doesn’t leave things as nature intended them. Here are a few tips on what to look out for…
Carbohydrates
A good mix of energy-giving carbohydrates can be found in oats, rice flakes and other cereals, dried fruit and honey – a good variety will give you a more steady energy release.
On the label: Any mention of ‘sugar’ in the ingredients is just sucrose – the refined, less healthy stuff, which has been stripped of all its vitamins, minerals, proteins, enzymes and other body-friendly nutrients. Along with the fruit sugar fructose, it will give you instant energy, but needs to be backed up with the slower starchy sugars in the cereals for a sustained energy delivery. If there has to be straight sugar, raw cane sugar is best.
On the nutritional information table, look at the quantity in grams of carbohydrate per 100g serving – and then the ‘of which sugars’ quantity. The sugars figure should be much less than half of the total carb content.
Fats
There are good and bad fats, and then there are very bad fats. The worst are known as ‘trans fats’ which are a byproduct of hydrogenation – the process by which fats are saturated. Saturated fats are the second worst fat but are often used for baking for their high melting point and longer shelf life. These raise your levels of bad cholesterol – trans fats raise it too but they also lower good cholesterol levels. High bad cholesterol levels increase your risk of a heart attack, so look for unsaturated fats, and the best of those are mono-unsaturated fats as found in nuts and olive oil.
There is energy in fat, but it is slow to digest and so not great for readily usable energy before or during a ride. If you see ‘vegetable fat’ in the ingredients list, step away from the bar, as that is a sign of trans fats. Most bars list vegetable oil but the source isn't always obvious. Some sources such as palm oil are high in bad saturated fat, whereas olive oil or sunflower oil isn’t.
On the label: Again, in the ‘per 100g’ column of the nutritional information table, look at the amount of fat in grams. This is the percentage of your bar made up of fat and should be well under 20g/percent. Under that you’ll find a figure that will tell you the saturated fat content of your bar, which should be as low as possible.
Preservatives, colours and sweeteners
The manufacturer only adds these to make the bar last longer, look better or be cheaper to produce – none of which are really for your benefit.
Related articles
Avoid anything with ‘benzoate’ in it – the preservative sodium benzoate breaks down to leave the carcinogen benzene. Sulphur dioxide keeps fruit ‘fresh’ but is a known pollutant. Avoid synthetic food colourings such as tartrazine, Sunset Yellow and Ponceau 4R too. The first is made from petroleum, while the other two are synthetic coal tars. No thanks.
On the label: Happily all preservatives, additives and colourants have to be listed as such in the ingredients, and by their common names. Most artificial sweeteners are treated like toxins in the body, putting strain on your kidneys or liver by adding to your toxic load. Many have been linked to cancer too. They include saccharin, aspartame, saccharin, sucralose and neotame. Avoid them all!
General rules
- Generally speaking, the fewer the ingredients, plus the better and the more familiar they are to you, the healthier the bar.
- Whole is wholesome. If you can see whole raisins, nuts and cereal flakes then the chances are they’re less processed, less degraded and better for you. The downside is that you’ll have to chew more, and digest a bit longer, but if it tastes good what’s the problem?

For all those who can't be arsed to get a degree in science of nutrition how about naming some brands that are well worth getting and which should be avoided. Or am I over simplifying things?

Studies have shown that sucralose can:
* Cause the thymus to shrink by as much as 40% (the thymus is your immune powerhouse - it produces T cells)
* Cause enlargement of the liver and kidneys
* Reduce growth rate as much as 20%
* Cause enlargement of the large bowel area
* Reduce the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50%
* Increase the pH level in the intestines (a risk factor for colon cancer)
* Contribute to weight gain
* Cause aborted pregnancy low fetal body weight
* Reduce red blood cell count
Particular warning to diabetics: Researchers found that diabetic patients using sucralose showed a statistically significant increase in glycosylated hemoglobin, a marker that is used to assess glycemic control in diabetic patients. According to the FDA, "increases in glycosolation in hemoglobin imply lessening of control of diabetes."

Dear Ms. Oshita:
In reading available information, I assume what you want mostly on aspartame is as it relates to cancer. While indeed it is a carcinogen proven by scientific studies aspartame triggers so many diseases, cancers and symptoms it fills a 1000 page medical text, Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic, www.sunsentpress.com by H. J. Roberts, M.D.
When FDA Commissioner Dr. Von Eschenbach took office I sent him this letter about aspartame and cancer, mainly because of his comment about saving people from suffering cancer, so a lot of this has already been done. http://www.mpwhi.com/project_recall_aspartame.htm Later 12 toxicologist asked the FDA to ban aspartame because of the last two Ramazzini Studies showing aspartame to be a multipotential carcinogen. http://www.cspinet.org/new/pdf/aspartame_letter_to_fda.pdf Now I'll go back to the beginning.
Aspartame was not approved by science but the political chicanery of Don Rumsfeld. In the aspartame documentary, Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World Attorney James Turner, explains how he did it. Here is a clip of the movie so you can hear what he said: http://www.soundandfury.tv/pages/rumsfeld2.html
The problem was Searle could not get studies to show safety. For instance, in the Bressler Report: http://www.mpwhi.com/aspartame_news.htm you read where they would excise brain tumors from the rats, put the rats back in the study and then when they died resurrected them on back on paper. They got caught, and even filtering out neoplasms they didn't want the FDA to know about. Over and over again they got caught. On January 10, 1977 in a 33 page letter, FDA Chief Counsel Richard Merrill recommended to U.S. Attorney Sam Skinner that a grand jury investigate Searle for "apparent violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, 21 USC 331 (e), and the False Reports to the Government Act, 18 U.S.C. 1001, for "their willful and knowing failure to make reports to the Food and Drug Administration required by the Act, 21 U.S.C 355 (i) and making false statements in reports of animal studies conducted to establish the safety of aspartame." The FDA called special attention to studies investigating the effect of NutraSweet on monkeys and hamsters.
Unfortunately Sam Skinner hired on to the defense team instead of dong the job, so they asked U. S. Prosecutor William Conlon and he did the same thing. By then the statute of limitations had expired. So Searle felt if they couldn't win the case simply hire the prosecutors until the statute gave it. Just the same the FDA had no intention of approving aspartame. In fact, the fraud was so great that Dr. John Olney (who with James Turner tried to prevent approval of aspartame ) told Searle to do studies in his lab so he could see that the studies were done honestly and with supervision. So Dr. Olney thought the FDA would never approve it because the studies showed that aspartame damaged the brain. However, what he didn't know is Searle failed to submit these findings to the FDA.
On January 30, 1980 the Public Board of Inquiry revoked the petition for approval saying they had "not been presented with proof of reasonable certainty that aspartame is safe for use as a food additive." Searle had spent $17 million on an aspartame factory and had no intention of allowing this to happen. That's why they hired Donald Rumsfeld who said he would call in his markers and get it approved anyway.
What were those markers? President Reagan had told Rumsfeld he would nominated for vice president and instead he used Bush.
Here's how the deadly deed was performed. The day after Reagan took office he appointed Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes to over-rule the Board of Inquiry. He knew it would take 30 days to get Hayes to the FDA and it would be too late, already signed into law. So he wrote an Executive Order making the FDA powerless to do anything about aspartame. He had someone on his transition team called FDA Commissioner Jere Goyan at 3:00 AM and fire him. Here is a letter from his wife as she was there when the person called: http://www.mpwhi.com/letter_about_jere_goyan.pdf
Once aspartame was on the market there was outrage in the public as consumers were diagnosed from seizures to multiple sclerosis, and some going blind from the free methyl alcohol. Senator Orrin Hatch tried to prevent congressional hearings for years. There was, however, 3 Congressional hearings from 1985 to l987. Hatch was a hapocrit in Congress and was paid by Monsanto. So the bill never got out of committee to put a moratorium on aspartame and have NIH do independent studies on the problems they were seeing in the population such as seizures, behavioral problems, especially in children, drug interaction and the effect on the fetus. It was about the time that Dr. James Bowen wrote the FDA saying that aspartame is mass poisoning of the American public and more than 70 countries - today over 100. http://www.dorway.com/drbowen.txt Here is his statement from the letter:
"For this reason, I am opposed to labeling aspartame content of food and drinks. To do so would imply that the government is taking some sort of responsible action....when the only responsible action would be to immediately take aspartame off the market, fully disclose its toxicities, offer full compensation to the injured, public and criminally prosecute anyone who participated in the fraudulent placement of aspartame on the marketplace."
How did Hayes get rewarded for over-ruling the Board of Inquiry? He went to work for the PR Agency of the manufacturer on a ten year contract at $1000.00 a day. In one article it states Hayes was only there about 15 days.
Because aspartame couldn't be proven safe the manufacturers funded the professional organizations like the American Diabetes Assn, American Dietetic Assn, etc. to stumble the public with propaganda and defend them. But what about scientists doing studies and finding out its a poison. The first thing they did was try threats. Here in the UPI Investigation you see where Dr. Wurtman was threatened if he did studies on aspartame and seizures he would lose his funding. He did. Here is the 8 month investigation by United Press International: http://www.mpwhi.com/upi_1987_aspartame_report.pdf To this day Dr. Wurtman no longer speaks out about aspartame, but MIT still gets research funds.
How do they do it. In 1978 International Life Sciences Institute, ILSI was founded. It's a research front group with members of the board people like Coke and Pepsi, Searle and Monsanto, etc. So if a university won't say their product is safe they don't get anymore funding.
Obviously over the years many independent studies have been done. It's of interest that the manufacturer always says there are 200 studies that show safety. If they done before approval these are the studies that the FDA complained about and tried to have indicted over it. What if they did studies after approval. They couldn't get them to show safety for approval, so surely they couldn't get them to show safety today. It's very easy to see how they fix studies, there are scholars in it.
Let's take aspartame seizure studies by Monsanto who bought Searle in l985, and has since sold. http://www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/abuse/seizures.html Why did they do them? First of all, seizures are listed 5 times on the FDA report of 92 symptoms from male sexual dysfunction to death: http://www.mpwhi.com/92_aspartame_symptoms.pdf People are having so many seizures and going blind on aspartame that the Community Nutrition Institute filed a petition to ban aspartame in l986. Again, aspartame manufacturer power prevented it from being banned. If you look over the seizure studies above you'll see they were so worried somebody would have a seizure that in the Rowan study they actually gave 16 people anti-seizure medication. They used one capsule of aspartame for a one day study, sort of tantamount to smelling the bottle. Then they get it peer reviewed with their power. So when consumers complain of seizures they say "we did studies and aspartame doesn't cause seizures".
They really have all bases covered. Today there are front groups like Calorie Control Council, and even with full knowledge that aspartame causes birth defects and mental retardation actually push the poison.
http://www.wnho.net/mh_aspartame_letter.htm
When 60 Minutes did a story about aspartame and brain tumors, again the manufacturer was saying they had all these studies showing safety. So Dr. Ralph Walton who was on the show decided to do some research, having to do with scientific peer reviewed research and funding. Here is that report: http://www.dorway.com/peerrev.html You will note just as expected that 92% of independent scientific peer reviewed studies show the problems aspartame causes, while only those funded or controlled by industry ever said it was safe. In fact, if you eliminate 6 studies the FDA had something to do with, because of their change to loyalty to the manufacturer, and one pro-aspartame summary, 100% of independent scientific peer reviewed studies show aspartame's problems. The only way to be sure you're getting accurate studies, as proven here, do not accept anything but independent studies having nothing to do with the manufacturers.
Like Dr. Bowen said two decades ago, this is mass poisoning of the American public and more than 100 countries of the world. In a nut shell, aspartame destroys the brain, the optic nerve, the immune system and central nervous system. It devastates every organ of the body. Today in the news we hear about an epidemic of obesity and diabetes. Both are caused by aspartame. Aspartame makes you crave carbohydrates so you gain weight. It can precipitate diabetes, simulates and aggravates diabetic retinopathy and neuropathy, destroys the optic nerve, causes diabetics to go into convulsions and even interacts with insulin. The free methyl alcohol causes them to lose limbs. Aspartame triggers all types of degenerative diseases from Lou Gehrigs which Dr. Bowen has from aspartame, to MS and Parkinson's.
According to the prestigious Ecologist, aspartame was even listed with the pentagon in an inventory of prospective biochemical warfare weapons submitted to Congress. http://www.mpwhi.com/ecologist_september_2005.pdf
Some of the studies show the horrific damage done to the body. For instance, the Trocho Study shows the formaldehyde converted from the free methyl alcohol actually embalms tissue and damages DNA. www.mpwhi.com/formaldehyde_from_aspartame.pdf
Here are summaries of the two aspartame studies, Ramazzini, that showed aspartame to be a multipotential carcinogen and passed down through the mother:
DR. MORANDO SOFFRITTI, lead researcher on two groundbreaking long-term aspartame studies..He was recently honored at New Yorks Mt Sinai School of Medicine with the Irving J Selikoff Award For his outstanding contributions to the identification of environmental and industrial carcinogens and his promotion of independent scientific research. Reviewing his two impeccable aspartame studies. Dr. Soffritti explains:
The first ERF study (2005) was conducted on 1800 Sprague-Dawley rats (100-150/per sex/per group) In order to simulate daily human intake, aspartame was added to the standard rat diet in quantities of 5000, 2500, 100, 500, 20, 4, and 0 mg/Kg of body weight. Treatment of the animals began at 8 weeks of age and continued until spontaneous death. The results show that APM causes a statistically significant, dose-related increase of lymphomas/leukemias and malignant tumors of the renal pelvis in females and malignant tumors of peripheral nerves in males. These results demonstrate for the first time that APM is a carcinogenic agent, capable of inducing malignancies at various dose levels, including those lower than the current acceptable daily intake (ADI) for humans (50 mg/kg of body weight in the US, 40 mg/kg of body weight in the EU).
The second ERF study (2007) was conducted on 400 Sprague-Dawley rats (70-95/per sex/per group). In order to simulate daily human intake, aspartame was added to the standard rat diet in quantities of 100, 20, and 0 mg/Kg of body weight. Treatment of the animals began on the 12th day of fetal life until natural death. The results of the second study show an increased incidence of lymphomas/leukemias in female rats with respect to the first study. Moreover, the study shows that when lifespan exposure to APM begins during fetal life, the age at which lymphomas/leukemias develop in females is anticipated. For the first time, a statistically significant increase in mammary cancers in females was also observed in the second study. The results of this transplacental carcinogenicity bioassay not only confirm, but also reinforce the first experimental demonstration of APMs multipotential carcinogenicity.
Over six years ago I petitioned the FDA to ban aspartame. The FDA has 180 days to answer it. They refuse, obviously because I'm using their own words, and they don't know how to get around the fact that everything is a matter of record. If it wasn't so criminal one would have to laugh at their propaganda - the idea that someone might even consider believing them. For instance, they will tell you there is just a small amount of methanol, and there is more in oranges. What they don't say is that in oranges that it is accompanied by ethanol which is the classic antidote for methanol toxicity and takes it out of your body safely. Here is a peer reviewed journal article about it. http://www.mpwhi.com/aspartame_methanol_and_public_health.pdf Methanol also binds to pectin. In aspartame there is no ethanol. Here is their basic propaganda answered with references: http://dorway.com/dorwblog/?page_id=606
Here is the detox formula we use for aspartame victims by Dr. Russell Blaylock, www.wnho.net.wtdaspartame.htm It also has his books on the subject. He has a CD called "The Truth About Aspartame"
There are efforts now in states and countries to rid the planet of aspartame. It is genetically engineered. The manufacturers are great at getting people in high places addicted. When I testified for the Senate in New Mexico half the senate was sipping Diet Coke. The past two presidents were addicted. Methanol is classified as a narcotic, it causes chronic methanol poisoning. This effects the dopamine system of the brain and causes addiction.
The manufacturers make sure there are people to protect them in high places. When Ashcroft served as Attorney General, Monsanto had given $4 million to make sure he would hold this position. Thompson, a Monsanto attorney, working for their lawyers was made deputy under Ashcroft.
I've lectured in other countries and I can tell you people are sick and dying the world over on this poison. It would be great to see it banned from California. First of all its illegally on the market because it violates the Delaney Amendment. Here are comments from one of the FDA toxicologists to Congress:
On August 1, l985 the FDA's own toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Gross, told Congress at least one of Searle's studies "has established beyond ANY REASONABLE DOUBT that aspartame is capable of inducing brain tumors in experimental animals and that this predisposition of it is of extremely high significance. ... In view of these indications that the cancer causing potential of aspartame is a matter that had been established WAY BEYOND ANY REASONABLE DOUBT, one can ask: What is the reason for the apparent refusal by the FDA to invoke for this food additive the so-called Delaney Amendment to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act?"
The Delaney Amendment makes it illegal to allow any residues of cancer causing chemicals in foods. In his concluding testimony Gross asked, "Given the cancer causing potential of aspartame how would the FDA justify its position that it views a certain amount of aspartame as constituting an allowable daily intake or 'safe' level of it? Is that position in effect not equivalent to setting a 'tolerance' for this food additive and thus a violation of that law? And if the FDA itself elects to violate the law, who is left to protect the health of the public?" Congressional Record SID835:131 (August 1, l985)
Here is my letter to the Assembly Committee on Health which exposes the fact that it's adulterated: http://www.mpwhi.com/letter_to_a_n_kim_california_ach.htm Because of the adulteration it means it violates interstate commerce laws.
Consumer power in action has done a lot to save the people from this poison. Holland Sweetener, the largest in Europe that made aspartame is out of business. There was another company there and they don't make it anymore either. Tosh in Japan has stopped making it as well. Merisant, one of aspartame's manufacturers, a few weeks ago filed bankruptcy. 45 members of Parliament signed for a ban in the UK. There is continuing effort to get banned in the Philippines. Romania banned it in the early 90's because it caused cancer. Today the European Food Safety Authority is doing a review.
Ajinomoto owns the largest shares of aspartame. http://www.wnho.net/recipe_for_death.htm
Today no drug is safe if the consumer is using aspartame because of the interaction due to damage to the mitochondria. It's used in hospitals because of the dietitians making patients even sicker.
If I can provide any further information I will be happy to comply. There is no way to show safety on aspartame with honest, unbiased studies. Eliminate industry studies to defend its product and you'll see how deadly is this toxin. Dr. Bill Deagle said its more deadly than depleted uranium because its ubiquitous in our food.

How about listing food that contains Aspartame and Sucralose.
* Cause the thymus to shrink by as much as 40% (the thymus is your immune powerhouse - it produces T cells)
* Cause enlargement of the liver and kidneys
* Reduce growth rate as much as 20%

The only cereal bar i've found that i like in the uk are the Carmans imported from oz in some Sainsburys stores. All others I've tried are just full of processed carbs and fats. Best of all though is to make your own. Just mix a healthy dose of oats, nuts, seeds, raisins and other dried fruits, honey, egg whites and some flavour with cinnamon. Get it in the owen and enjoy the result. Better than anything you'll ever find in a shop. Might take a few tries to get it right though :-)

Aspartame.
I hate it with a passion. Check out the 'energy' and 'sports' drinks you are becoming hooked on. Lucozade Sport has aspartame in it. All the 'No Added Sugar' fruit squashes, diet croak/pepsi, max and zero. It is even in chewing gum!
It is the ONLY food additive to have a health warning.
Since it was widely introduced in the UK back in '95, there has been a steady rise in all sorts of health problems: Asthma, Cancer, Obesity, Tumours, Skin disorders . . . the list is long, too long. The health of the nation is at stake yet hardly anyone knows anything about aspartame! No one dare question it. Those in power dare not say anything bad about it for fear of being taken to court by the manufacturers.
It is as if the population is stupidly poisoning themselves and they don't care.
E951 - Avoid it!

Why not make your own, as in the recipe here http://www.bikeradar.com/fitness/article/make-your-own-organic-energy-bars-11916
Have been making these for the last year, fabulous. You can feel the energy flow immediately from the honey, the rest of the ingredients give a slower feed.
tip:-buy a silicon tray to cook them in, they just slide off.

I've always avoided soft drinks (except pure fruit juice). For cycling fuel I like Torq bars. They are soft and easy to eat with dry mouth! I can't really eat the Cliff or Nakd bars (from health food shops or on-line) on the bike, but off it, they are good - with no additives. I use Nuun when it's hot, but just water otherwise. I can't stand carb drinks anyway (too sweet and give me a bad stomach) and I was always worried about the sugars ruining my teeth, so discovering I don't get on with those drinks anyway wasn't a bad thing. Seems like every food/drink is about convenience, versus additive crap you really don't want to have to put inside you. Much better to plan in advance to stop for proper food at a cafe en route, or make your own foods and take them with you, It just means a bit of extra planning; planning the prep/cooking time into your schedule (and shopping list).

Hi All
I make my own energy bars based on the recipies given in "What Mountain Bike" Issues (58 and 63 I think , "Fuel Pages") "Fresh legs flapjacks" and"Organic Energy bars". You make them yourself from natural ingredients, no preservatives or fructose syrup to artifically make your blood sugar spike. They taste great and everybody who's tried them love them and you know EXACTLY what is in them. I don't buy or eat the commercial stuff anymore.

Hi all - interesting to read what everyone thiks of energy bars.
Not all the bars are the same - some are just full of poor and cheap ingredients and they charge you a forune for them. Check out Crazy-Jane.co.uk as we actually manufacture energy bars and other nutrition bars. The ingredients we use are first class and the bars we make are second to none.
We can manaufacture specific bars to suit your needs and often supply for events or even to clubs and we can print your own name / club on the wrapper. Yes we supply some big brands, but i have just set up the website so that you can now buy our energy bars direct at a good discount over what the retailers charge !
I set up the business , named after my daughter , as i have a genuine interest in sports nutrition - its what i studied for ny degree .... so i understand that adding silly fructise surups result in blood suage spikes and insulin rebound reactions so reduce energy.. OURS DO NOT... they are designed with a balance of carbohyrates for timed energy release and they taste great uisng natural ingredients!!

Is there one grain/nut/dried fruit bar that is available in the UK that I can buy that is good to eat and does what it says on the label, please?
If I wait in a shop reading a label to discern the amount of glucose to fibre and/or protein in the nuts, I'll probably get a wry comment about "Are we contemplating eating the label or the fruit bar, Sir?" So it would help if there was some commercial health bar that Pro's eat or at least healthy people eat that I can do likewise instead of blocking up a health-food store's corridor?

I wonder could you pass comment on this Bar I got on Monday in my Local Bike Shop in Dublin. I went on a Trip to Drogheda which is around 54 Miles there and back to Dublin and I was very Tired coming Home. I did not bother to stop for something to Eat, I just had Rests for a while every so often.
So in view of needing some sort of Food to give me Energy in future on a Long Ride , I was in the Cycle Shop getting Gloves and so decided to get these 4 Bars.
It is Italian with USA Ownership , Sand City CA and it is called Enervit Energy Bar. I wont bore you with all the Information but some Relevant Parts.
