A mate bought a mint second hand Cervelo road bike last year from the states and got stung for the tax. Can't remember the exact figure but is was close to or over £500.
I have been hit a few times with tax from the US. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't but overall I would say it works out cheaper. However, on a one off large item, if you get caught, it will be expensive.

Hi
I found the bike I want, element with red and white.
Now worst case what would I pay, as I am quite thick when it comes to maths.
Is the frame costs £500.00 or about $800.00 plus £100.00.
What do you think... Roughly the duty and stuff would cost, Do not want to spend £1000.00 on a 07/08 frame.
Thanks so much guys for the help

Hey its just the frame.
rocky mountian element 50
This comp is not willing to lie about cost of frame so will be about 500.00 pounds by the time auction ends I would say.
Thanks

As stated in my post earlier, Frame cost + p&p x 4% + Vat 15% = what you pay.
I got mine from USA as well total cost was $780 USD then with duties and taxes it cost me £550 all in.
Better to not lie about cost or contents as if anything is wrong you have no come-back

That's not bad, 20%
Will keep an eye on the auction,
I don't know why I am so obsessed with the Canadian frame colour as don't usually like red
Thanks so much, sorry to repeat

It can work out a lot cheaper than buying from here on occasions, one Blur 4X I was watching on ebay went for £635 and the other which is identical to mine, but may have less scratches although hard to tell as the anodizing hides a lot went for £825 recently so I'm happy so far.
Is that altitude frame no good for you then, looks really sweet.

The altitude looks sweet, but dont want to pay 950 for a frame.
Wish I had the money, but got two kids b-days coming up and x-mas.
Got my eye on the element 50 so lets hope it does not go to the 950.00 mark
But I dont think it will as he wanted $1000.00 for it and it never sold, so its on auction now.

Hey could someone answer me quite quick as I am having problems.
This guy in america is trying to charge me $220.00 plus insurance to ship a ... max 7lbs bike frame.
That seems way to much, and he is trying to make money off shipping.
Thanks

I would say so, I paid $80.00 for my Frame and a few other bits insured and trackable USPS International priority Mail service, but I did have to wait about three weeks for it. Total weight was 17lb including box, mine was well packaged. It had a frame, cranks (no chainrings) seatpost and spare mech hanger and bushes in it.

$80.00 is better than the 220.00 he is charging.
I am only wanting a frame, nothing else.
but did a quote for a full bike on ups and its 299.99.
I might ask if it can be shipped other ways as 220.00 is like £140.00, if thats the case prob will have to leave it,

$220 sounds about right for UPS/FedEx. USPS may be cheaper, not sure if they'll insure for greater then $500.
