About 8:30 tonight there was wood laid across the road down the hill towards Kingston Gate roundabout. Big branches and lumps of wood, done on purpose. It could cause a nasty accident so beware that someone seems to think this funny. I bunny hopped it (just - at 3 inches or so high), but if you had poor lights and didn't see it in time it could be bad.
I cleared it for any others but beware.

why would anyone do that, I thought the park was shut at that time now though?

be closed to traffic by dusk but they don't close the ped gates until 10:30 I ride though bushy park at 9:30 pm and it's fine even the local rugby/football team has the pitch lights on some times and are training.

That is really unpleasent, antiscoial behaviour. Dog walkers often lay branches across the footpaths around the outside of the park to discourage MTBers but I've never seen branches on the road. I remove the branches from the footpaths because:
1. It stops us getting past with a pushchair
2. They are dangerous when running at dusk
3. It irritates the f*ck out of me that people put the branches there in the first place
Glad that the OP made it through safely. An off and a busted collar bone could be nasty when the park is dark, cold and empty.

The dear cull has now started I think for six weeks - therefore no pedestrian access between 8pm and 6am (I think). Be aware of this though - I went for a wander last year with the wife in the park at about 9pm only to see flashes and hear shots... They don't always lock the ped gates!
Other than that, though, I thought the part was open 24/7 for peds and cyclists - I've certainly had more than a few drunken rides in the park (the cycling variety) in the wee small hours after a night in the pub...
As for the obstacles - well dodged and good man for shifting it out the way...

The signs say no pedestrian access between dusk and 7.30am so as a result I've been cycling around in a morning. However, I went past Richmond gate this morning at 7 and it was already open to cars.
I'm confused.
I don't want to cycle to the kingston gate at 6.45 in the morning or only to find I have to turn around and go a different route.

I think there's some confusion here - as far as I'm aware peds are still allowed in until 8pm during the deer cull.
I've been riding through all week at about 6.30pm - and the place has been bustling with cyclists, runners, dog walkers and skiers...

are you sure it says pedestrian not vehicle? as Bushy Park during the cull closes at 10:30pm and opens at 8am for ped gates. and I'm sure in the past I've gone though RP at simular ie 9PM times.

I'm pretty sure it says pedestran, or it might just say closed. These are temporary signs in addition to the normal opening and closing time signs on the gates.

Thanks, I thought it was 8 but I guess that's just herd the masses out by the time they really want to start shooting.

I've noticed that a few times too, I thought at first it might be the rangers but then they wouldn't be doing it across the trail, seen them laid on some blind bits too, charming.

bare in mind the 10:30 pm to 8 am is bushy park, so RP may be different I think it opens at 7:30am? go to a ped only gate and that should have the correct notice.

I sent a link to this post to the manager of Richmond Park. I got this very prompt response below

I hadn't realised the Deer cull had started - I didn't see any signs when I entered at Robin Hood gate and left at Roehampton. I saw 3 other cyclists in there too.
