I am currently looking into accomodation for the Marmotte next year and I am not having much luck. King of the Mountains is booked up and similar places want you to commit to a week which I can't do. I have emailed a number of hotels in the area in english and a google translated French multiple times and haven't had a reply. I will probably try phoning but my french isn't good.
Any recommendations of hotels or other accomodation? Any contact details? Any room free at an apartment you may have hired for the event?

A group of us did Paris Roubaix last year and a French colleague of one of the guys booked us at some motels where you can pitch up and book in by card. I think it was these guys They seemed to be on loads of towns and man routes. Few staff, you can book a room 24/7 at the door with your card. Clean quick and just what we needed.

I was looking to stay in Bourg itself as I stayed there this summer. I will check out some of those links.

There's very limited hotel space in Bourg and they tend to be booked up well in advance. You've more chance of getting a room in Alpe d'Huez itself as there are literally dozens of hotels. The tourist office there are usually very helpful;

Do bear in mind that the ski season will be starting very soon so you may find you'll have to wait until next spring before you get a room confirmed.

We stayed in Hotel l'ancolie (sp?) about 4k from the top. Good value, very friendly, and English spoken.

Nice campsite at the foot of the Alpe that has chalets - I stayed there a couple of years ago - Camping La Cascade

Also, there is a great campsite called Le Belledonne, which you can book with direct and also thru Eurocamp. Just had a check and Eurocamp still has availability in its mobile homes here for Marmotte weekend and you can stay however many/few nights you need. The campsite is in Allemont, about 5km out of Bourg, just on the corner where you would turn off to go up the Croix de Fer. I have stayed here a couple of times too and it's really nice.
My husband stayed in a hotel in Bourg this year for the Marmotte and it was so awful he ended up moving up to the Pic Blanc at the top of the Alpe. He wishes they had gone self-catering in a chalet/mobile home as it would have made preparing meals more flexible.

There are loads of holiday rentals in Alpe D'huez itself, it pays to look on french websites and even to use google.co.fr as they don't seem to advertise a lot on english websites. I booked one 4 weeks before the marmotte this year with no problems so booking one now should be easy.

We were able to book an apaprtment through the Alpe D'Huez tourist office. However I think they only started taking bookings closer to the event itself - around late April for reservations IIRC.

I am looking to do the Marmotte in 2010, does anyone know when they start taking entries? Also what time do you have to be on the startline as I am planning to camp nearby overnight?

Seconded Herbegement florie-neige -same place as Hotel L'Ancolie (spelling?) in the village of Huez - great gite and just a ride downhill to the start and from the finish. Bike shed too!
