Evening all,
I've been scouring the net for a seatpost shim but not had any luck finding an off the shelf one in the size I require. I've got a Scott Genius MC-10 with its rather large seat post diameter of 34.9mm. I'm looking for a shim to take the size down to 29.4mm to fit my snazzy new seat post
If there isn't one made in this size, has anyone had any experience of getting a "custom" one made by a local machine shop etc? I'm guessing it should be a fairly easy job. If anyone can recommend a place they have used I would appreciate the details and any idea on a rough cost. Also, what would be the best material to make the shim from, I'm guessing aluminium? If it makes a difference, my frame and new seatpost are both carbon (the current standard seatpost is aluminium).
Many thanks in advance for any help or advice!
Cheers

Getting one made will probably be more expensive that buying a new seatpost that will fit the frame properly, or a shim of a more "normal" size an the seatpost to fit it.
USE only do a 34.9 to 31.4

Yeah I'd already found their site here, shame they don't do what I need
I'm guessing that if I got their shim to take the diameter down to 31.4mm, I couldn't just use gaffa/electrical tape to "thicken" up my seatpost 2mm from 29.4mm to 31.4mm? I assume that someone would have suggested this if it was an option. Forgive my ignorance, but would this not work or would the seatpost keep slipping down and/or be dangerous?
Appologies if this is a really dumb suggestion, bear with me I am new to biking!
Thanks for your help!

any reason why you can't use that with a 31.4->29.4 shim inside it? they are top hatty shaped so they won't slip against each other. It's faff but maybe a cheap solution to your problem. My evil has a 34+ -> 31.6 ally shim factory fitted and I had a 31.6->27.2 shim fitted in that to take a grav dropper that I got cheap from a mate. Worked fine.

I thought of that, but I can't find an off the shelf shim going 31.4 - 29.4
USE don't list one on their website. If I can get two shims to work then I'd be happy with that, like you say they are top hat so won't slip inside.
Thank you for your help!

Well cane creek will do you 21.4 to 27.2 but that don't help! Buying the right (or at least a useable with a shim) seatpost looks like your only solution I'm afraid.

hmm, a USE SX shim 32.2->27.2 or (maybe better) a USE thermoplastic 25.0 -> 30.0 would be the right thickness (2.5mm) for the job. Whether you could get it to open up enough to take the larger post I'm not sure but I rekon a bit of fettling would do it and wth it's only a fiver. not in stock mind but maybe you could find something that does the job....

Top man, sounds like a good idea!
I've just been searching and found this site:
http://www.dotbike.com/ProductsP1638.aspx?utm_source=internal&utm_medium=site&utm_campaign=DRV
I've ordered a thermoplastic 25 - 30.4 shim. For less than £6 delivered, its got to be worth a try. Maybe if I put it in hot water for a while it will soften up and be easier to open up. Like you say, I'm sure with a bit of fettling it can be persuaded to work
I will report back once its arrived and I've had a go.
Thanks again for your help, much appreciated!
