Having seen your physique, DDD, I'd refer to the fast twitch/slow twitch comment earlier. It's probably less to do with age, although I think it's true that your body will develop more slow twitch musculature if you do that sort of exercise. You definitely looked like a fast twitch, explosive energy type to me, not so much designed for long hauls. You need to try track riding.

Yes, this is definitely true! Just hit the big 40, and would without doubt whip myself at 18, no probs.
Also, did the Isle of Man End2End in Sept (3-5hr mtb) - thought I did quite well placing 207 out of about 1000 - then saw there were 3 guys at 60+ ahead of me! Think Nick Craig who won is also in early 40s? Definitely still time to improve!

I agree, I'm 37 in December. I'm not sure that had I excercised as hard as I do now when I was in my 20s that I wouldn't have been fitter then, but I didn't have the will power or force of character back then. I was happier with cigarattes and alcohol in some shady club dancing the night away. Now I'm all about early morning club rides and maltodextrin. They do say though that men in their early 30s are at the peak of their endurance sport abilities.

How about the astoundingly theory that they were quicker than you to begin with and, although age may have slowed them a bit, they've still got enough in their legs to see the likes of the "young" off?

mmm when I was 17 I still lived at my folks place and spent a lot of time mountain biking over the hills there house is on, so my 17teen self was a lot lot fitter, I'm probably stronger than he was but he'd toast me up a hill. he was about 11stone, I'm 3 stone heavier now, and only just into overweight....
