That is heavy, my daughters Shogun undercuts that by a good margin (although nopt as good a spec)......

Mind you still lighter than some of the 8" downhill bikes some people like to XC on....

For anyone trying this, Merlin do shimano groupsets at good prices!

One sticking point will be the P&P, That I am guessing will add close to £50 to the cost of teh above unless you compromise on individual parts to get more from one source like CRC.

Shame the seat tube isn't 31.8 or you could save a couple of quid on the front mech

Darn good effort though.....

to kick up the quality another step, replace the fork with a mz supercomp, for a fiver more, an acera mech for £3 more, and a avid single digit 5 brake for 4 quid more and it looks very nice...

brakes and mech are from chain reaction, forks are merlin ( i think, i may have forgotten, otherwise they are at winstanley for just a fiver more)

Can one of my parts be "Pull an old bike out of a skip"? Very easy to build a very effective mountain bike for under £100 if you start from that Laughing

We still do it because we're forever chasing what we've already found

another thing you guys are forgetting is that the average person who buys a B.S.O isn't gonna have the time or knowledge of putting a bike together. So you're gonna have to factor in labour costs too?

Send private message
rapid_uphill
labour costs could be another thread, when the spec list starts to look good ill be first to build it.

Cables you can get satisfactory quality (to match this budget in other words) from Wilkinsons supermarkets very very cheap (complete rear brake with outer and both end options is, for example, just £1.04!)

Frame looks nice for the price, any idea of weight?

For a more budget build, how about these forks?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Onza-Smart-Guy-Forks-Trials-Sil-Magura-Disc-stiff-26_W0QQitemZ350274692357QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR?hash=item518dffa505 OK you'll need disc front (or redrill the Magura lower mount for V's which can be done), but the saving on the fork....
