Right here is the deal.
Ive been riding for a number of years now and have found myself living in Scotland with a lightweight hard tail xc bike and a beefy transition bottlerocket with Rockshox Totems. Two fairly different bikes. I am looking to sell them both and buy an all mountain bike that can hopefully do the job of both.
Now I know it will never accelerate like my hard tail or suck up the bumps like a full on dh rig but maybe im no longer a full on dh rider! Saying that I still make trips to Les Gets, Fort Bill etc and mess around in the woods with drops etc.
I have looked at Lapierre Spicy's and the Cube Fritzz as well as the large and confusing world of Trek and Specialised.
My budget would be between £2000 - £3000 and I like a good looking bike with clean lines and specs that are around the XT range.
So any ideas?!?!?!?!?!

Hi,
I've got a brand new 21.5inch 2010 trek ex 8 (in white) that I'm selling. I haven't even cocked my leg over it yet!! They are the nuts and fit what you are looking for. Its on ebay at the mo, so have a look at the pics if your interested. I want £1790.00p for it (retails at £2000). I need shot of it.... Its not going to shift on ebay....(This is of course presuming you are 6ft or there abouts).

I thought he meant "big" as in, big and burly.
You know, how people refer to a DH bike as a "big" bike.

sorry guys I meant big as in burly not big as in frame size. I ride a 17"/18" frame and am 5'10". Bike looks good but think frame wil be a bit too big.
Any other ideas?

scott genius, with the remote rear shock lockout and 150mm of rear travel it could be exactly what you're looking for. The genius 40 is about 2 grand, burly enough for drops, light enough for XC and generally a really nice bilke. then you have the genius 30 carbon for a bit under 3 grand, unless you really want the carbon and need the light weight, it's probably overkill. I recently got a genius frame, and you won't be disappointed.
Oh and if it helps, 3 of the top 4 riders (1st, 2nd and 4th place) in the last mega-avalanche (enduro freeride race) were riding scott genius'. There are also some cheaper versions of the genius (the 80 and the 60) at about £1500 and £1700. It's up to you how good you want the spec to be, but they're all great bikes with good kit. though that 2k 40 is last years model, the 2010 model is about £600 more.

Just buy the frame and keep the best bits from your two bikes at the moment then sell whatever's left. I've gone for a Santa Cruz Blur 4X to provide similar thrills to what you are looking for, pretty hard to come by though. The Blur LT wouldn't be too far out of spec either.
Although I do have a soft spot for the Marin's

575 is not exactly a BIG bike and i wouldnt fancy doing anything to hardcore with the carbon back end, a 4ft drop is about max i would throw mine off.
i would go with a spicy,frittz or remedy.
this frittz is a bargain if your ok on a large.

That's why i really like my scott, even on full travel you can really hammer the power down, makes me glad i didn't make my patriot into an AM bike, big and burly but you can't really put the power down without a load of pedal bob. Maybe it would have been different with a propedal air shock or something though.
I guess everyone will preach about their own bikes though.

a 575 built up correctly is a big bike... you can get the alloy rear for added strength and the coil rear suspension coupled with fox 36 forks and some strong componentry.

Have a look at the Yeti ASR alloy, might be a bit more up your street than the 575.

Intense Tracer or (if you can find one) an '08 5.5 or 6.6 (the predecessors to the Tracer
I test rode one last month and found it a bit too slack and big (in the burly sense) for me, but was blown away by the spider 2 (120 F&R with more trail-y and less FR geometry)
575, as said; great bike, can be built up heavy or light. Mrs B has a light one (carbon rear end, Vanilla 32 140 fork) and she rode that in Are this summer, but she's no DH racer. Alu rear end with a 36 bolt through fork sounds like a right hooligan 
The new Yeti 7 whatever they're calling it (ASR 7) might be the thing?

but if you want to ride any longer trails, personally I'd look for something less slack than a lot of the burlier AM offerings (Tracer/Nomad etc), but I generally like steeper bikes so perhaps that's just me.
my next bike purchase will almost certainly be a Spider 2.....
