I've recently bought a C1 which states it's an XR-E R2-WC..
is it worth upgrading with this mentioned recently by Moggy on page 60 that says it's a XPE-WC-R2
Even though my C1 only arrived recently (amongst others including a couple of MTE P7s and an Aurora P7) I'm already excited about upgrading it!

Lol
Its easy to get carried away! I wouldn't bother upgrading if your already on a R2, id look at going for the XPG from Kaidomain instead sku 10065 on their site i think! mine should of been with me by now, finger crossed for tomorrow, id wait till i have mine though to say weather its worth it or not!
When looking at Drop-ins check the input voltage get one that upto 4.2v only, will work better for your 18650, than one that can take 2 x 16340's aswell!

In the real world where people don't spend a weeks wages on lights that might get used once a year, can anyone suggest any that run in double figures?

I was thinking that maybe of few of the UltraFire WF-502B CREE XPG R5 WC also mentioned on page 60 [edit: actually page 59 by Dazza] would make good christmas presents!
I'm looking forward to some feedback on those!
Many thanks,

Without knowing what type of riding you do, I would propose:
A) ultrafire 502b Cree XPE-WC-R2 £11.63 x 2
or B)TrustFire P7-F16 SSC P7-WC 3-Mode £22.38
or C) A with CREE XPG R5 WC LED £14.00 (approx)
pair of 2.4Ah 18650 cells £3.88
Charger £5.44
4 x 22mm pipe clips, 2 M5 35mm bolts 6 nuts and 4 washers.
A = 560 Lumens (1/2 a car headlight) 30-35w halogen equiv.
B = 900 Lumens (3/4 of a good car headlight) 50w halogen equiv.
C = 750 Lumens approx - no feedback on performance yet
for £35.00 (or less) - these will be far superior to anything you can buy from you LBS for under 100 quid.
This would be good for on road, fire trails, XC and slow technical stuff. If you want to more off road/faster... etc I would double up the above spec.. or mix and match, i.e. P7 on the bars 502b on the lid.
For 50 quid.
you can gor for the
HA-III SSC P7-C (SXO) 3-Mode 900-Lumen LED Bike Light Set (referred to here as the magicshine - this will be good for Fire trails, XC and slow technical stuff.. If you want to faster more technical then you will need a head mounted torch either the P7 or 502B above.
For off-road technical, I reckon you need a min of 800 - 1000 Lumen (basically a car headlight) and lights both on the bars and on the lid. I have 4 x Ultrafire 501b which gives me 1K lumen two on the bars and two on the lid. This is outperforming my riding buddy who spend £350 on Halogen lights 18 months ago
For tail lights CRC are doing a 3 mode LED for 3 quid, I have one on my seat post and one one my hydro pack.
you can get 18650 cells ranging from 1.5Ah to 2.8ah from old laptops. I have a large collection and will be bunging a few on ebay shortly £1.50 a pair + PP
Personally I would go the torch route over the magic shine, because I find torches are always handy. I would also go, lower power/greater numbers, because it increases your running time - gives your resilience to failure and more flexibility where you point light

finally decided to go down the dx torch route. can anyone recommend good 18650 batteries, high and a charger to go with them? I would prefer a charger that doesn't set fire to the house.
Also what is turbo ferretting? Is it legal? Immoral? Does it hurt the ferret?

Moggy82, what is the best way of adapting the torch unit to accept the dummy cell and remain watertight?

I just tried to find a cable that would fit well in a 5mm dia hole, then just taped it up with electrical tape, using the same kind of method as you would if bandaging up the thumb part of your hand! i wanted it to be removable if needed (if i wanted to run as a torch or if it went wrong) so silicone was out of the question.
You could use a gromet first a compression fitting type would get a good seal but that would mean a larger hole! you could probably get quite technical if you wanted but i wanted to keep it simple!

Just bought myself a new MTE SSC P7 (sku. 12060), then came across this thread. It looks like I have ordered last years model (non C-Bin emitter)l, is it worth cancelling my order with DX and getting the newer SSC P7-C?
Ordered: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12060
Switch to: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12623 ?
Looks like customer service at DX isn't great, what are they like at refunding incomplete orders? Status is "waiting for supplier"... I only ordered it yesterday.

I must have posted a million times that best offer buy are shipping this stuff in under 10 days, yet people seem happy to wait 4-6 weeks to save 37p.
Drinki - you've orderred the 5 mode - it should be more flexible though the beam will be narrower and the power a little less.

I hope my XP-G dropin arrives tomorrow, 1 torch's switch died ( the A10B cheapo ) and 1 torch XP-E just isn't enough for wet muddy trails.

Thanks fot that diy, very helpful.
My riding is anything I may do in the day! I had some Smart lights about 10 years ago that had a twin flood/beam, and a great heavy lead acid battery, still went down the local trails with them, DH, and XC, so I think I'll cope with the new breed of lights

Has anyone else bought a Crops NRX35 from On-One?
http://www.planet-x-warehouse.co.uk/acatalog/Crops_LED_s.html
Puts my old Electron halogen 5+10w to shame! Only downside is that the battery cell's diameter is 1mm too narrow to accept Vapextech rechargeable or hybrid batteries.
Does anyone know of any 13mm diameter rechargeable AA batteries?

Just to help people decipher some of the power claims. As some lights are advertising 3W or 1W Cree and others are talking Lumen.
If I have an LED driven at:
1A, on 3.7v (e.g. - an 18650) I get around 4W (that is pretty much your standard current spec 280 lumen XPE-WC-R2.
2.8A on say a P7 i get over 10W.
now I know that some drivers regulate the voltage to, but the calculation is Amps X Volts = Watts. The important measure is Lumens per watt, as this is the true measure of power and efficiency.
e.g. a XPG-R5 claims 132 lumen per watt. Which means running at 3.7V and 1A you get nearly 500 lumen. or assuming you could drive it at the same ampage as a P7 (which is unlikely because the P7 is multi-core), you'd get in theory nearly 1400 Lumen.

Not quite, as found with the xpg the more you shove down it's neck doesn't equate to more light it just gets wasted as excess heat, have a nose on candlepower forums for more details.
