A good steel frame could be ideal - bit of springiness but light. My 1997 Stumpjumper (my old one) is still a superb bike and made from (this is from memory!) Tange Prestige tubing - similarish to that Easton stuff - double butted, light but totally bulletproof.

Would be a shame to get another carbon bike only to break it again. Good steel bikes just do NOT break and they last forever (almost).

Carbon and Alu fatigue/fail over time - I wouldn't trust any carbon or alu frame over five years old. I'd happily ride a 20 year old steel bike anywhere though.

1997 Specialized Stumpjumper - still fun
2007 Stumpjumper Comp with upgrades - main bike

i know what your saying matt, but the more modern carbon bikes have a different design drop out on the back, and also, i have no idea How old the frame was when i got it and what it had been used for prior to me getting it either?? not sure, really depends how i get on with the saveing lol! but dont think it'll be thi side of my birthday in feb!!
i'd love another carbon frame, rode so nicely and was So chuckable, but also looking at alloy frames around the sub 4lb mark too, have emailed the guys down the barn as after todays ride didnt get down there about a couple of frames ive seen for guidance/advice more than anything,
but, as you said, dont want to save hard, spend a couple of hundred on a frame for it to break first time out!! after all, i'm not the lightest of riders!!!

i'll try and get out when i'm feeling better in myself and give the bike a blast but have that niggling in my mind that now i dont like it! loL! not so easy to Re like something when youve not so much confidence in it anymore! Confused

Mine's in tomorrow for a few tweaks - have a horrible feeling it could be new rear mech time Crying or Very sad

Just thought steel could be a compromise - nice and simple but strong. Best ride a few I guess!

I did Materials Engineering and studied lots on steel, alu and carbon. Ti is still my favourite but damn pricey!

i hear what your saying about steel too! the old original smooth rider! will have to shortlist a few styles of frame and see what suits when i've got the money!!

Less than 10 days to Soggy 1. How are people's training going? I'm guessing its just me and Mark now.

It isn't really and update but http://www.fullysussed.co.uk/index.php?p=1_6_South-West-Race-Series

I bet the Idless race is the early April one when I'm away. Grrrrrrrr

I'm cursed when it comes to Soggy Bottom - I can't believe someone has arranged a major event (which I have to go to) the night before - arrgghhh!!

Just got the bike back - new skewers (Hope of course), sorted fork seals, brakes tweaked and new pad - feels nice and tight now.

That and a new TV - bit of a wallet basher of a day but all fun.

Can't beat new bike bits, haven't got anything new in general just a trekmates bamboo baselayer tried it at work today and im very impressed with it, kept me just right all day.

Still itching to get out and ride but i've just got back from a good gym session so im in no hurry, weather is looking good for next week, can't wait to play with my new tyre combo in idless, bissoe trail is hardly a challenge for them, might lower the front and raise the back pressures to give the front a bit more bite.

As for training well i always am but i tend to compete against myself, anything else is secondary tbh, plus i want the bike finished before i can even think of entering, sure it's good enough now but who wants to enter when they're just 'good enough'

Matt - im really enjoying those lightweight innertubes specalized do, for some reason i always puncture schwalbe tubes but spec im fine and they seem lighter and imo a better quality tube.

I'm not riding Soggy.

I've done so little riding in the last 8 weeks that I doubt I'd get round the fun race at anything like a half decent pace.

Seriously considering Haldon at the end of the month though . . .

In between working and riding, I try to find some time to take photo's

haha nice one dazz!
tesco have dropped theirs down to £2 each now, seems was a bit of a mis print lol!
need to pop to trago's soon as running out of puncture patches!! will most likely go falmouth though, will see what they have! (watersports centre next to trago does nice coffee and Ansome bacon sarnies!!!Wink)

matt, sounds good! Love new bike bits!!!!! although a new telly is always nice too!! have to admit, since killing the carbon one i've stopped looking for Bling! Shocked
going to pop down and have a natter with the guys on monday about frames etc. as seen a lapierre one that looks half decent But, isnt normally a frame only deal by the looks of it! so will pick their brains!!! Wink

Chest really started hurting on friday, think its muscle damage from my incident with the tree, but if is still as painful on monday i shall go the doc's and check its not ribs!!! so no riding for me tomorow as realy does hurt lol! Embarassed

Missprint my ars* more than likely they noticed they were shifting so bumped the price only to have no bugger buy them so dropped it back to a more reasonable price. Laughing

Seen this practice done a ton of times when they notice it's popular. Evil or Very Mad

Bugger all tubes in fowlmouth btw already tried. Wink

Then again you may get lucky and catch them when they've stocked up.

haha! yeah think you could be on it with that matey! quite often prices Shoot up for no reason then Drop back down to below what they were for a while and then back up to the original, make more sense to leave it as it was hahahah!

trouble with trago's is that if tyou see anything you have to buy enough there and then as there's no garantee it'll be there next time you visit!
some friends got unstuck with that on kitchen tiles! bought enough but inevitably ran out went back and none left!! result = 90% finished kitchen!!!

Got Loads of repaired and tested tubes to use anyways! Wink just like bunging in a new one! ahahha!

been to the docs today about my right handside chest pain!! Doc thinks its quite likely fractured/broken rib or two from my crash into the tree!
got an X-ray booked tomorow morning so will see from that! But got some great strong painkillers now too!!
hoping its not as that could keep me of the bike for a smidge!
