Because you're bent over on the bike, bibs are heaps more comfortable than an elasticated waistband digging in to your middle.
Well, that's what I find anyway. | Plus the additional bit of fabric over your kidneys is a boon on colder days

Bib tights/shorts? No VPL, more comfort, and better warmth, plus they hold your tummy in nicely.

just remember kids (and I'm talking to one specific person from the Burgess Hill spring sportive here) - the bib bit goes UNDER your top.

That reminds me of the rather portly gentleman I saw on the London to Brighton last year...in his King of the Mountains jersey

Well I bit the bullet and wore the tights in today. I actually enjoyed wearing them whilst riding and for some reason it actually felt as if I was going faster for the same effort. Maybe it was due to less air resistance... or not wanting to be seen! I managed to make it to my desk without anyone noticing. The only problem was it was a bit cold! Definitely need to get a warmer pair.

love thy self, love thy tights.
I'm a recent convert having purchased some Altura fleece lined tights. However, I find that after i've put them on and done the necessary lunges, close inspection reveals that my leg hair actually pokes through in places. If it catches you off guard, it can be a little disturbing!

Not the base layer though? I mean, it wouldnt be the "base" layer then, would it? | Bibs under everything. Having the base layer under the bibs feels horrible around the waist area unless you spend a long time making sure it sits absolutely flat under the shorts.

Hmm, perfectly comfy with my merino top under, but I may try the other way round just to see.
I thought the purpose of a base layer was to quickly move moisture away from the skin, which would be severely disrupted by having fleecy or lycra between it and the sweatyness, surely? |
Base layer top, bib tights and old /wellorn/ crash damaged lycra summer shorts over bib shorts [unless they have their own pad]. This extends the life of the bib tights indefinitely.
