hi guys , decided on upgrading my suspension forks after , ahem , recent rider abuse lol.
can anyone provide a link or how to video on step by step removal of existing forks.
already checked parktools site and our forums tech faq's and not found anything suitable.
i am technically skilled and have decent tools ( sparky by trade ) just need some guidance.
many thanks for any help or tips
p.s. bike is felt Q520 ( '09 ) and forks are suntour xct.

remove stem/spacers and the headset top cover and hit the fork steerer with soft face mallet.

this should break the friction on the centering wedge. the fork will then (with the wedge removed) fall out

then remove the crown race from the fork and fit to new fork if you are not changing the headset.

just thought , is the wedge washer located at the top or bottom of the head tube ?
and do i need to grease anything on re-assembly ?
grovelling apologies on ignorance.

If its a split one like Hope's it's a doddle. The solid ones are tough but with patience ands
a screwdriver you can get them off without damaging the race or the forks (too much anyway!)

Biff!!! I did exactly the same to my Q50 glad to finally see someone else with the same bike Very Happy

Mine got changed to MZ Bomber R22s so up 20mm of travel. What you changing your's to?
Make sure you also get all the internal bits the right way up (Had problems for weeks till I took it to my LBS, my apparently competent bike tech mate got summin upside down Razz)

update to original post ; forks and crown race now successfully removed but....
wots the best method of removing the threaded star washer embedded inside the
old forks steerer tube ?
i'm assuming thats part of the headset and wont be included within the new foks ?
thanks again for any help.

I would possibly advise that they are a massive jump up of 40+ mm of travel...

But the starnut is something you wana get a new one of. now these things are either easy. Or a ***** to put in. cos a couple of quid Smile

thanks for your reply esamenio , the recons i am getting are only 20mm more travel and
any additional fork length can be compensated with adjustment of top steerer washers.
i'll try violence and a hammer to get the nut out Laughing

Ah okay. Thats fine didn't see a 100mm version. And also we tried that with my nut. It got bent. Best bet is a new one Smile

Your best buying a new one there only a couple of quid. You can set the new star nut with just a hammer but it may go in at any angle so try and buy a star nut setter tool should be under a tenner.
