AIUI you remove the casette and replace with single gear aligned to your outer ring.
Remove crank on drive side and remove unneeded rings (and mech/cable/shifter), fitting new single ring to crank.
Remove rear mech/cable/shifter, fit chain tensioner to rear hanger and shorten chain to suite.
Simplez.
There is an ebay shop (velo something or other) that specialises in SS converion parts, for example they sell narrower BB ( bought one for my 1x9 conversion) to make it neater, tensioners, single speed rear conversions (gear and spacers) etc etc etc.

This is what I did, but not for the faint of heart
1. Took, rear dérailleur off
2. Took front dérailleur off.
3. Took both rear and front shifters and cables off the handlebar.
4. Took off rear cassette.
5. Used on-one single 16 tooth cog with spacers on rear wheel.
6. Drilled out rivets of crankset leaving only the middle ring (32 T) (yours might be bolted)
7. Installed on-one chain tensioner.
8. Cut chain to correct length
9. Positioned tensioner arm for straight chain drive.
10. Pedaled like fcuk on flat and downhills!
