I'm really struggling to decide what All Mountain bike is going to suit me best. I have (selling) a Santa Cruz Bullit, with Shiver DC's on it, and also had (stolen) a Rocky Ridge for getting back into riding at the new trail centres. Up till last year when I got the Ridge, I have ridden the Bullit in an almost entirely DH, Freeride style. However I'm looking to condence these 2 bikes into 1..

I see me moving away from the hucking, DH style more into the trail centre style, but I want a bike capable of both.. I have narrowed it down to an ever widening selection!!

Giant Reign 1 - Almost definatley want to change the forks straight away
Lapierre Spicy 316 - Concerns over strength and it being to XC

I had also concidered a Marin Wolf Ridge 6.9, but I rode the large today briefly and it is just to small (i'm 6'4).
To throw a spanner in I also quickly rode a Iron Horse 6 point 6, and this was much more to my suiting, feeling much like my Bullit. This is on sale as a last one ex-demo bike. Felt heavy like it would kill me to ride all day but I can imagine it being fun for the freeride side.

I reailse this is all going to be about compromise, but there must be something out there for me around the 2k mark. Biggest problem is places don't have either of the above 2 bikes in yet, and I probably can't test ride one till nearer next year, and bigger problem still is that due to the stolen RR, this bike is being replaced through insurance and via an online shop so I can't technically test ride any of them!

Please can people offer any first hand knowledge of either bike even '09 models, as I'm going around in circles, whilst going mad!

Any suggestions then? is the Reign up to it? Maybe I should just keep the BUllit and buy Lyriks? Seeing as people keep watching it on flebay but not bidding! Rolling Eyes

the scott genius is an amazing bike, not sure if they make any larger than a large, but 2k will get you some good spec on an amazing frame capable of some rough stuff but still light and agile

Don't want a single pivot bike again. Don't like pedal feedback and brake jack.

Just looked at scott genius and it's classed as a marathon/trail bike, looks a little light weight..

the genius is a fabulous trail center bike, if you want to keep the freeride/hucking up then move onto the ransom or go for the trek remedy/scratch (2010 models)

it is lightweight but the new models have 150mm of rear travel, i think it says something like it being capable of marathons due to the lockout on the rear shock etc but is a strong bike. In the last mega-avalanche (enduro-freeride race in france), the riders in 1st, 2nd and 4t place were all riding scott genius' Wink
speaks for itself.

though as ride whenever says, if you want to do stuff slightly bigger, go for the ransom

Ransom does look a little over the top and heavy, can't see it being capable of being ridden around a trail centre easily. Gemotry and stance looks real slack and low. If they weren't tauting the Genius as 'lightest in it's class' marathon machine, I'd maybe consider it, but it looks fragile and lightest in it's class must mean strength compromise somewhere.

Guess I'll keep looking.

well my build came to about 29lbs, so not amazingly light, but not that heavy either, i wouldn't have called it a particularly fragile bike

Oooooh that scratch looks great but outta price range Sad

I had considered the Remedy but they are expensive too.

ransom 300g of excess carbon reinforcing.

When the journos were trying to climb jacobs ladder without dabbing, they struggled on super lightweight bikes, some pro turned up on a ransom and climbed the whole thing sitting down.

They weren't! That's the second time you've posted that and it's completely untrue. Rolling Eyes

I guess it depends on how much DH stuff you intend doing, a Spicy is more than enough for trail centres but not sure about regular DH. I have a Zesty for trail centres and a Froggy for DH (mincing DH not proper DH :p ). I think the Froggy (318 at least) would be a bit heavy for all day riding (although some have it as their only bike).

I don't really think there is a bike, on your budget, that'll do what you want. I know when I was looking for a bike mainly for DH stuff but that I could also use for trails if my Zesty was out of action it was getting into £3.5k-4k territory before the freeride/DHish bikes got light enough for normal riding to.

Yeah, so maybe i should get a air shock and some lyriks's on the Bullit then?
