Hi,

I'm thinking of doing the route de Grande Alpes next year and trying to do a bit of a detour to Ventoux. I’m struggling to find information on how to get there. I think I have a couple of options:-

1) Head across from Barcelonnette. Anyone know a good route?
2) Get to Nice and go to Ventoux or near by by train but I have no idea if this is possible.

Does anyone have any experience of doing this or know the best way to get there? Sadly I don’t drive so hiring a car isn't an option Very Happy

Jonny

The nearest TGV station is (I think) at Avignon which is only 30km from Carpentras so fine on the bike. It's a bit much for a day trip but no problem if you stay overnight near Ventoux.

There are good trains to Avignon from Geneva and Lyon. Nice to Avignon seems to be about 3 hours - http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

I got a train to a place - a nice town - called Orange. It's just south of where you want to be - it'll be flat for about 30-odd km.

Yes, Orange is quite near to the Ventoux. The first time we rode up (no luggage) we were camping in Sault (to the east of the Ventoux) and rode from there to Orange to pick up the Bike Bus to come home.

In fact the Bike Bus is a good way of getting to Provence and a lot less hassle than either flying or train IMO. We'd got off in Valence, had a week in the Vercours before riding south to climb the Ventoux at the end of our tour.
