Cafewanda - running in spikes in the first time I'd be surprised if they didn't give you calf pain Very Happy They have so little cushioning and support compared with road trainers that the mix of running on your toes and less shock absorbtion would be quite a shock to the system!!

Train in them for an interval session once per week and you'll soon be fine (or injured Wink )

Fair point Very Happy

I meant to do that on Tuesday at the track session but not got round to cleaning them yet Embarassed

Expect the track session to cause even more soreness until you're used to it. Tartan (rubber crumb) tracks are very bad at causing foot problems - personally I rarely trained in spikes when I was a track runner. Don't do too much too soon and you'll be OK.

Tuesday nights are interval sessions and I'm the slowest in the group Very Happy . What I might try is the warm up then change into regular running shoes for the actual session.

Must remember to clean them this weekend

Sounds like a good idea. I trained in spikes this weekend for the first time since January in preparation for upcoming X-Cs; I went on the grass and that seemed to work quite well:

a) less stressful on the feet/lower legs; b) slower c) good preparation for running off-road.

Cheers
Very Happy

I'm so bummed. I'd just bought a new pair of XC shoes when my knees started giving me trouble.

I really miss running a lot. TBH I find training on the bike difficult to do, but heading out for an hour's run is brilliant. You may cover less ground, but you see so much more.

Maybe time to ease myself back into it?

Well, did a 5 miler on Saturday afternoon. Round local country park, really enjoyed it, felt great afterwards. Think I will do a fair amount more.

I've been where you are every summer for the past 5 years; just get fit to run then injury strikes - it sucks. The best cycling substitute I've found in terms of time efficiency is an hour's workout on the turbo using HR as a guide to effort or an hour out on the roads on the fixed wheel.

When you start again, EASING back into it is the key - note to self, must learn to take my own advice Embarassed

Yeah ... need to EASE!

Your post got me thinking - I reckon I'll wander over to the park this evening and perhaps do 20 mins or so...

Lovely to see the runners out and about Very Happy

Still not cleaned my spikes though. Got 45 mins before track tonight so should be enough time unless 'stuff' has started growing in the bag where they've been since last Saturday Embarassed Shocked
