I've got Shimano 105 gear / brake levers on my 2007 Giant SCR 1.0.
The left hand, front chain ring gear changer has stopped working properly.
It pulls the cable, and the front mech, into position, but doesn't click into place to hold it there.
Anyone got any thoughts on what it might be, or if its fixable? Taking it to an LBS is a pain, and looking at the price of replacements I would like to fix it!
Is it a servicable unit? Any common faults?
Cheers!

Seems to be afairly common problem - is it a double? There seems to be some issue about 105s in that the same shifter works both doubles and triples - and sometimes with a double it goes past the double point or something. my LBS seemed to think it was common and easy to fix, but then decided it needed new interior gubbins - same thing happened again so I switched to ultegra. However I'm probably going to put my old 105s on my winter bike.

The bike is a double but the lever does have 3 clicks.
When set up it works fine.
Are new interior bits available? If it needs replacing can you buy them seperately or do they have to come as a pair?
If it makes any difference I did have it upside down yesterday in my carpeted garage.

i think this is an acknowledged problem with left 105 shifters (assuming it's the same issue). The ratchet inside mine broke after very little use. I replaced with an Ultegra one.

I've just been fiddling with, and WD40ing the mechanism and it eventually locked into place to secure the cable, it then wouldn't release it. Lots of wiggling later and it has released it, but wont lock again.
It doesn't seem obvious how to get either cable out either, so if anyone can shed any light on getting them out it would be a start!
Any idea if Shimano are interested in helping out? Bike is about 22 months old, and I bought mail order so no LBS to fall back on....
Its pretty rediculous paying nearly £200 to replace an small item on a bike that cost me less than £500!

hope the link works; its a list of exploded drawings that may help if/when you pull it apart.
Head over to Madison/ultimate pursuits for the price on internals.
As for paying £200 for a small part on a bike that cost less than £500. Do you not worry when you get out of the saddle and crank it? If the parts = the cost of the bike then the frame cant be too great?
Failing it all PM me the exact model number of the shifter and I can try and help.

Just a possibility. I had this problem and it was caused by the the mechanism being fouled by the wiring for Flight Deck computers that is built into the levers. The wire looks like a piece of white tape. I just snipped mine out and averything was fine. A previous thread on here showed that others had suffered the same problem with 105 levers. Obviously no good if you are one of the rare people who uses Flight Deck!

Make sure the mech is not hard against the top limit stop when on the big ring. Pulling the cable away from the down tube should move the mech a little, up to about 1mm. Not having this extra movement will cause the shifter to jam and ultimately fail. You need to either slacken the cable or adjust the limit stop a little.

Common problem on 105 - I have had two fail on Tarmacs and luckily have a good friend that works for spesh - he said common problem as the teeth on the internal ratchets break and they just wont hold when clicked. They were both quite new ones as well, one being on a new bike i got for my brother in law.Try under warranty as def faulty or else maybe a cheapy on e bay? The Ultegra ones are faultless as i have those on another Tarmac. A real pain as the prices on new levers are just mad!

Thanks for all the help.
I took it off the bike to have a fiddle and a bit of broken metal fell out.
I've noticed that Shimano have a 2 year warranty on 105 stuff, which i'm just inside of. So I'll get onto the shop I bought it from and hope for the best!

Its a warranty issue. I got my LBS to contact madison, they sent a new internal for the shifter for free, and then I paid the LBS to fit it to cover their time. Job done!

Dealer says they cant help because its outside of 12 month warranty and to contact Madison.
Madison say they cant deal with me direct and to contact a Shimano service centre.
My local Shimano service centre says that i have to go through the dealer i bought the bike from for a warranty claim, and that its only got a 1 year warranty.
I've read here that Shimano 105 has a 2 year warranty. Is that only if you buy it as a component, and if it comes as OE on a bike its only 1 year?
