I'm looking at internal (or sometime referred to as semi-integrated i believe) headsets. Am I right in thinking they can be used on standard bikes headtubes, and just replace my standard threadless headset no worries? I can't really find a clear answer

no they can not.

you need the same type as you have now.

read about it all on Parktools.

Okay thanks. Do you have any reccommendations for normal threadless headsets with a low stack height. Lower stack height the better really, that's why I was looking at internals

Okay so i've got a set of forks that are only just off fitting, literally millimeters. So i'm thinking reducing the size of the headset cups will be a good way to squeeze those few mm's out and get a proper fit. How come a semi integrated one wont fit? It looks as if it just pushes into the headtube the same as a standard threadless

The head tubes flare out top and bottom for integrated headsets to accommodate the cups which are larger (still 1 1/8th steerer)

If you rested one on top of a normal 1 1/8th headtube it would be mm's out.

Can't be used on your frame. My marin has one, 5th pic down, look at the stack height and the headtube:

have a think.

could you press your current bearings that are bigger than your head tube into it?

the bearings are the same size in the internal. Wont fit/wrong design etc..
