I'm new to the DJ scene and would like to give it a try. I've been looking around and the most convenient brand to get would be the Scotts. (not many brands are available here)
Which would be a better starter bike? In terms of value for money, potential for upgrades and of course the components it comes with. Which would you get? The Scott Voltage YZ 0.1 or the YZ 0.2?

If you are not sure about a bike why not pop down to a local trail and have a little ride on a bike ( don't go and hit jumps or anything, just have a little bike around and see how you feel ) - The worst thing is to buy a bike you have never been on for big $$$ and dislike it's 'feel'

For a beginner, the YZ02 will be fine, DJ2 forks are a lot better than DJ3s but they should be fine for a starter bike. Another bike to look at is the mongoose ritual, i have one (now HEAVILY upgraded) and it's a great bike. I bought it used for a very good price and it's turned out very cheap, though my seatstay next to my brake mount did develop a crack which i had to get fixed, but the newer models have a gusset there now which i would assume is to rectify the problem

thats what your legs are for unless your really crap and land front wheel first, the jumps are tailored to have a smooth landing unless you come up short, but then it won't matter if you got suspension or not because its gonna hurt. I used to ride DJ on a BMX and never had a problem, its just a great way for suspension fork manufacturers to make cool coloured forks that cool kids wanna pay big bucks for.

I've been visiting some jump parks, but it was with my SC Nomad 08. Haven't had the feel of a HT DJ bike before and the shops don't even have one for me to try out. more of a gamble here.
And I'm 5'10, and not too sure if the size would be good for me.

Depends what exactly you want. For street/dj only i'd go for singlespeed with a bolt through rear end and chainguide.
See the silly little bike in my sig! Now got nicer bars/stem much shorter and wider, manuals like a unicycle, lovely!

Where do you live?
I'm sure either will be awesome bikes, Scott are bringing out some top notch rigs lately, have you looked around at second hand? Or are you set on a brand new bike?
IMO it's hard to justify spending out for the 0.1 when I'm sure the 0.2 will be a great bike for you for as long as you need it.
And junglist_matty - I can see where you are coming from, but if a rider hasn't got good flow and can't 'suck up' impacts too well, then it can be very useful.
Oh. and not to mention it means you can make it a slightly more versatile bike, if needs be!

Albo, I live in Malaysia. I'm pretty set on a brand new bike as I think it will be a one time purchase as I ride more trails than jumps. Just that I'm itching for a new bike.
ride_whenever - Awesome bike! So good to see a Scott Voltage around, It's kinda hard to find people who actually love the voltage, someone said before that it's too expensive for what it is.

I don't ride dirt jumps, i ride park, and when you're landing to flat sometimes, it does make a difference

if you're riding singlespeed you shouldn't need a chain guide unless your chain is REALLY slack...

I swung by my LBS and a guy there talked me into buying a Da Bomb C4. Anyone with any experience on this frame?
to build up the Da bomb C4, it will cost somewhere in between the YZ0.1 and YZ0.2. Would it be worth it?
It should come with these parts
Forks : Marz DJ3
Wheels: DaBomb headspin hubs, Da bomb revolver rims (are these rims better than Alex rims FR30? or would atom lab pimplite be better?)
Crank: Truvativ Blaze (this is for XC right?!) single speed
headset: Da bomb
handle bar : Da Bomb Big Stick
stem - Da bomb Glock
Brakes: Tektro mechanical
Another thing is, is cromoly so much better than aluminum?

the truvativ blaze set is for XC, see if he will do some gusset bmx style cranks for you. the da bomb frames are pretty decent from what i hear. Not too sure about the rims but i'm pretty sure he hubs are sealed bearing, so decent.
Also, regarding cromo, it's stronger than alu, but heavier, better for abusive riding and the tubing is generally smaller, which is the in look right now.

ilovedirt, thanks for the reply. the hubs are sealed bearing, so, I guess it's ok. I really doubt I can get gusset bmx style cranks. It's pretty hard to find around here, I'll try a neighbouring country.
I've narrowed the search down to the YZ02 vs the Da Bomb C4 frame, anyone else have any takes on this?

to be honest mate, i'd probably go for the scott. not heard much about the da bomb but the yz02 is a genuinely nice bike and seems to be better geared towards the sort of riding you want to do.

Yeah, actually the YZ0.2 is a better choice. It's cheaper. It has the parts I want/need...
Looks like it is kinda decided.... unless I get my head messed up again looking at other bikes... and I heard that Giant STP will be coming to my shores in January! wait? don't wait? No idea how much it would be tho.

from looking at the giant website, they're not doing a singlespeed STP this year, looks more geared towards 4x. Go for the scott. The giant will be a lot more expensive too, from looking at the spec, though the scott has a better brake.
