Winter has obviously slowed me down to a pace that the puncture fairy was able to catch up with me. Twice in 2 days.
Anyway the gatorskin has 2 major slices in to it and so has to be chucked. However before it goes out with the rest of the rubbish for landfill, I was wondering....
...is there a way of disposing of old bike tyres in a more friendly way than having the council bury them in a large hole in the ground? What does everyone else do with theirs?

I remember reading somewhere that some charity or other was taking old car tyres and turning them into soles of shoes, the soles were literally made up of the treaded part of the tyre glued to the base of the shoe. Not sure they could do the same with a 700x23 Gatorskin though, unless the wearer had incredibly narrow feet!

My council recycling centre (used to be called The Tip) has a section for tyres, and that had car, bike and motorcycle tyres in it, so they can be recycled for a variety of uses i'm guessing.
Unless you want me to get all Blue Peter on yo a$$ (as the yoof might say) and tell you how to make it into a lovely christmas gift for a female relative or friend? You do have sticky back plastic, pva glue and glitter, right?

They probably separate them out for burning. I'm sure I read somewhere that other than using old car tyres in their present form, they are impossible to recycle. I know that some electricity generation plants burn rubbish and tyres are very good fuel

Collect a dozen or so. Take them up a tall building near a busy streey for an exciting game of "pedestrian hoopla"

Certainly used to be the case, but now there are plenty of other options. Maybe a call to your local council to ask what they do and if they burn them, ask why they arent selling them to a company that does one of these things?

Edit: although there may not be any companies that are buying in the area of course, and that site does point out the many problems associated with recycling tyres that have to be overcome.

I reckon you could make a pretty stylish belt using old tyres and a decent buckle - unless you have a 700+ waistline, of course. In that case I'd suggest using inner tube as braces...

Send them over to Northern Ireland, where they could add them to the pile....

Howies make belts out of old bike tyres - not sure where they get them from though

I'm recycling my old tyres as decoration for my snakes' vivaria now they're getting bigger. Much cheaper than buying fake vines from a pet shop!

I believe that old tyres actually get shredded and mixed into the compounds in tarmac to improve grip. Ask your council for details of their tyre recycling facilities.

I re-use them when i can, especially in the shed or on bike racks. A pair of tin snips and some gaffer tape sorts them out. Else, ashamedly, they go to the tip man...who I am convinced takes everything out and sells it to somebody for cash.
I was thinking of using the old tyres to make some curtain tie backs, stair bumpers or perhaps some driveway edging, but the cost of removing wifes foot from my ar5e outweighed that option.
Damned fine question though...I'm glad people like you exist to catch the rest of us out.
