Just did a calculation using machine head gear calculator, you would need to do 160rpm to do 55.3mph with a 53 x 12 gear, impressive Very Happy

Not if you were freewheeling.

I have gone faster than that freewheeling but Steve said tailgating on the flat so I assume he had to pedal as I do not think you can freewheel on the flat at 55mph Very Happy

Comming off Rivington managed 49 MPH towards Adlington.
The other way 47MPH
Loved it. Very Happy

61mph on the steep side of Holme Moss this summer. Didn't touch the brakes once.

(That's 61 according to the bike computer, so could be accurate or inaccruate, I have no idea.)

52 mph on the White Rose Classic, on the road from Patley to Grassington going past the reservoir. Also managed 47mph on the rollers with 52-12 gearing. Also came off at 20mph and ended up in James Cook under the surgeon's knife. Lesson learnt, if you wear glasses, put the scraps outside your helmet straps so they come off in an accident not embed themselves in your face.

Bike computer said 59 on the B3212 on Dartmoor. Scared myself stupid and slowed down! Before I wimped out I was being left behind by a couple on a tandem - nutters!

On the flat, under my own power, it would probably be around 37mph...but that was only for probably 10 to 20 seconds.

I didn't have a speedometer on my track bike so no idea how fast I've been on the velodrome...only it was scary. Very Happy

I already posted max on road so wont bother again but last week hit 40.2mph in points race on velodrome which is pretty fast, means I did 151 rpm for that.

Bhima
[Cue Epic Orchestral Film-style Music]

I sprinted away from the lights today, in a tailwind, which meant I "dropped" Rolling Eyes a police car behind me. I have sprinted away from that junction many a time, but today the bike was vibrating violently, even over the smooth bit down the centre of the road. Shocked I was going very very fast and spinning out a massive gear like my life depended on it. I never before have gone so fast that I get through the next set of lights, as they usually go red JUST before I get there. I looked back to see the police car reluctantly stop at the red light as I was approaching breaking point. I knew it was a record-breaking sprint. I knew that today was the day I hit a new high speed. I got as aero as possible; my chin below the handlebars as I hoped there were no unexpected potholes ahead. My legs were screaming "STOP", but I kept going, and thought of Cav to keep me sane. Nothing could stop me now. The road was starting to blur and I was getting dizzy so emptied the tank completely and sat down, in total oxygen debt. I look down, eager to see the max speed, and guess what?

I hadn't turned the bloody computer on. Rolling Eyes

Mad Dammit!

you were sprinting with your chin on the bars......while riding down the centre of the road, while being followed by a police car - who did nothing about it....

Do you dream this stuff, or do you actually believe it happens...?

You did not "drop" the police car he was probably pisxing himself laughing at you, he is probably on here reading your posts and recognised you.
It is impossible to go that fast from a standing start in a high gear that you will drop a car, not even Jamie Staff could do that.
I am sure had you computer been on you would have hit 70mph at 300rpm.

Normally I think of Victoria Pendelton. But to each their own. Smile

anyone actually ridden with bhima? he's in the middle of the road all the time ffs. it safer i think. i dont think he wants dickheads in bmws overtaking him while on the phone especially in a sprint. he probably dropped the police car coz it was not able to overtake and he went through a yellow light and there was actually some sensible stopping distance by the driver for once.

my inability to spin low gears to acceleraate fast from a standstill has left me dropped this exact way before. desperately trying to hold his wheel. Laughing

back to the original threaqd

I can sprint to about 28 on the flat.

Dowhnill I once got to 49 and chickened out. im well heavy though.

Coming down the hill into Rostrevor (from Hilltown) passed the 30mph speed limit sign at 67KPH (42-ish MPH?). Had to slow down - bloody speed ramps. Long climb from Hilltown, so going opposite direction would be interesting, speed-wise. This is in the Mournes in N.Ireland. Great cycling country, please come and try it. See www.action.org.uk - cycling - enter BT1 in the postcode box - 1st two are in N.I. Sorry about digressing.
