I've got a Cove Hustler which I have had since March but I have never been able to get the gears to run smoothly!
Its running 18 gears, 9 cogs rear and 2 up front.
It has a Deore xt Derailleur front and rear, with Truvative FireX chainset up front and I believe SRAM rear cogs and a Shimano chain - This was all from a Marin (new) Donor Bike. Does the mix of gears effect this?
I have tried adjusting the gears myself and also asked my LBS to do so but they have never worked correctly, I also suffer from Chain Suck, think thats the term where the chain holds onto the front cog and wraps itself round the cog.
Any ideas?

Strange?
Has the Bottom Bracket been installed correctly? i.e., spacers on either side correct? If not it could alter the chainline, which may cause problems.
What shifters are you running?
9 cogs out back and 2 up front is perfectly normal. So I see no problem there.
I am assuming that you are using a 9-speed chain etc
Are your cables in good working order and lubed etc?
Sounds like your mechs have not been set up properly. It's easy for us to feck our own gears up, but what alarms me is that your LBS cannot do it?
Anywhere else you can take it?

Thanks for your response.
I am not completely competent at bike maintenance so I could have easily buggered it myself - I couldn't tell you if the spacers are installed correctly or not as I didn't build the bike and wouldn't know the difference.
I am running LX shifters.
I assume I am using a 9 speed chain also, the reason I say that is that I purchased a Hustler Frame and a Marin Wolf Ridge as a donor bike this got me the bike I wanted within the budget I wanted to spend. - The only part of the running gear not used was the front mech due to the frame fitment.
All the cables are new and seem to move freely through the cables.
When I say LBS, its not exactly local - there is a Cove dealer a little but further afield so may take it to them, the only problem is actually getting there as its in the wrong direction....

I recently set my own gears up for the first time, I had to ask A LOT of questions on here, research videos on youtube etc but got there in the end. Once you have done it for the first time, it's remarkably simple. First time took me ages.
Check out Park Tools or Sheldon Brown (both good sites) - your limit screws sound as if they are not set properly, hence your chain coming off the smallest ring up front.
This helped me no-end

Flip your bike upside down and measure the BB shell in width in MMs. 68/73/83mm. This determines the amount of spacers used either side to achieve correct chain length.
WHAT BB are you running, is it an external - you will need to check the manufacturers website for tech info etc.
Sounds like the components you donated are fine, what XT mech are you using?

Thanks for your replies so far.
All the parts were brand new, the Donor bike was a brand new Marin Wolf Ridge which was a good spec'd bike but reduced from 2k to 1k so that made the build cheaper overall.
I have had another go, I seem to get the indexing right going up the gears from small cogs to larger cogs but then it does't work on the way back down...... I don't get how this can be, I thought if the indexing was right for one change then it should be for all.... thats what I have been led to believe anyway!

poor cable routing resulting in too much friction in the cables. |
Could a new cable solve that? When looking this afternoon, I noticed a slight kink in the cable.....
Are cables easy to change? The only bit I am thinking may be difficult is connecting in the shifter itself...

Changing cables is a PoP, it really is, the shifter will have a small screw directly opposite where the cable enters, the old cable will push out there and refitting is the reverse of removal, put the plug back in, crud going in due to missing it off is a quick way to mess up the shifters operation.
