I'm planning to build a new winter road bike this year but can't decide on the right brakes to go for. I'm going to fit mudguards, so require the deep drop type, 57mm I think.
The two option I have found are:
Tektro R538
Shimano R-650
Any opinions on which is better or worse than the other? Or other alternatives?

Whether you require deep drop brakes is nothing to do with fitting mudguards. It depends on the distance between the hole in the fork crown and the rim measured vertically. Whether you can fit mudguards depends on the clearance between your fork crown / rear stay bridge and the tyre.
If you do need deep drops either of those will do fine. I use older Tektro on my winter bike and they work well. I did change the blocks to Koolstop Salmon though.

Yes John, they are deep drop to fit the frame, not the mudguards... this is what allows the mudguards to be fitted.
Any other reviews or opinions on Tektro R538 vs Shimano R650?

The Tektro R538 are £45 for the pair, compared with the Shimano R650s which are £50 each!!
Quite a difference in price makes me (the buyer) question if Shimano's offering is better than the Tektro's which are essentially half the price.

The shimano are priced per pair on the Ribble link I posted, I know because I ordered them and have them fitted to my bike

I took my Tektros off, make me an offer, I fitted Shimano and felt the difference then I changed pads to Koolstop WOW ! Beware Shimano pads and soft rims, they will wear them out VERY quickly.

Do you know if the Shimano R-650s are compatible with Campag 11-Speed brake levers?
I was wondering if the pull ratio was different or if the outer cable size will fit?

Just had a new winter bike built up with Centaur and R-650s (Why don't Campag do a deep drop caliper any more?). Seems to work fine. OK technically the GS is ten speed, but the break levers are the same shape etc.

Is that you Des?
I don't know if you remember me... I used to often bump into you while you're out posting letters in Woolmead / Stuart Avenue. Last time I saw you I had the black/white Pinarello Opera? You were always encouraging me to race! Friend of Gerry McManus and part of London Irish CC when it existed.
Haven't seen you there for a long time now...??
Luke.

Sorry Des,
I didn't think until I had posted the first message, then realised I got you both mixed up!
Is Dave ok? I haven't seen him around for ages. Pass on my regards, and email if he wants to drop me a message...

I'm kind of looking to a bit more club riding but haven't got a club at the moment. I'm based in Dollis Hill during the week at at my Partners near Slough at the weekend.

Hi Luke,
Join up with the club on Sundays - we leave from Kenton Library and normally head West, so you could drop off at Slough if you wanted.
Dave's Ok - he had a nasty spill in August in a LVRC race, and seperated his AC joint, which effectively finished his season just as he was finding some form.
