Clean around the crown race get all the grit and grease out give it a good spray with a releaseing aerosol like GT 85 or Plusgas let the release oil soak in overnight if possible.
Get a widish thin tipped screwdriver (I ground down a wide screwdriver till it had a nice thin blade) and tap it in the 12,3,6,9 oclock position you just want to move it a fraction each time you tap in screwdriver. Keep working your way round till you can fit in a bigger screwdriver keep working round till the race pops off it really is a slowly slowly catchee monkey thing. Trying to get it off in one hit damages the forks and the race.
If the crown race is so flush to the crown you cant get a screwdriver tip in try tapping in a Stanley knife blade in the same 12,3,6,9 oclock fashion.
If it still wont shift try a bit of heat wrap a rag round it and pour boiling water on rag let the heat soak into the metal and try tapping in screwdriver again.
In future buy a headset with a split crown race they take about 10 seconds to remove.

Coll. Thanks for the tips. I'll give it a go and see what happens (when my new forks come).

Never had any problem with the classic tool kit really....broad bladed screwdriver and a big hammer.
Be gentle, be patient.

Go to your LBS and get them to use the proper tool.

I'd agree with the stanley knife blade, then the flat screwdriver method. Just remember to work slowly and carefully as you don't want to risk damaging any of the parts.

Most LBS use the screwdriver method and if your lucky they wont use a sledge hammer

Second that, i happen to know one of the mechanics at mine uses a hammer for headset installation, in particular setups. Although i'm pretty sure he just does it to mess with me when i'm there.
