The Beginner
so just built up my Hybridised commuter, frame is fresh painted, so should I protect it against cable rub (and chain suck) or is such damage honourable battle scars?

Agree with Scott on this point, A commuter is made to get abused!

Usually I do protect the bikes, although it will obviously get damaged etc...

I'd disagree on the cable rub, it can chew through a frame very quickly if left unchecked.

Small patches for cable rub. However if you were talking about current rub then it's a monstrous carbuncle and a sign of poor maintenance on the bike.

Live with it, it's a badge of honour.
I can name where and when most of the scars on my frame happened, including a rather fetching one on my swingarm from Le Pleney.

Cable rub can be a real issue.
When I got my bike I didn't pay attention to the cable that ran under the BB to the front mech. The cable was too short and each time the rear suspension moved the cable rubbed against the BB, Thankfully I discovered it in time but not before it had gouged a trench in the BB shell and rubbed the cable down to the metal.

As for cable rub on the headtube I've solved that with a combination of cable ties...

The brake cable on my '96 Proflex rubbed through a 6mm aluminium spacer on the forks. Like a hacksaw, once a groove has been started the cable just sits there and grinds away...
