Why bother listening to music at a volume at which you can also hear traffic? In my experience, you end up hearing some distant tinny sound - like listening to your neighbour's radio.

Rolling Eyes Yeah I've lost count of the number of times I've "self murdered" with headphones in the last 7 years...

i dont like listening to music when i am on the bike. i know others that do...thats fine....but I don't.

I don't like listening to tunes whilst snowboarding either, but again lots of people do.

My decision is not based on any safety issue real or otherwise....I just don't like it.

I went out with a scruffy girl once......turns out she was just crazy!

Used to be a guy who road down the middle of the King's Road from World's End who had a radio blaring out of his backback. Was on an MTB and never seemed to do less than 40mph, while drooling, steadfastly refusing to move out of the way for cars and shouting at RLJers. Quite a character, but haven't seen him for a few years. Used to enjoy bopping along to his tunes as he sailed past.

Cars have stereo's in the that can be so loud you can hear them a mile away. All the motorcyclists I know wear headphones & ipods whilst on the bike. So why not cyclists?

I always have my headphones on, for one thing it stops me getting earache from the wind, I love to have various motivating or chill out tunes on whilst riding.

I found it a lot more relaxing on the bike not to hear the 18 wheeler steaming up behind me. I just assume that there is always some one there and ride accordingly. I find it safer to be more assertive in my road position and planning ahead.

Besides when your racing through standing traffic laughing at the cagers in the queues. A bit of metallica goes down a treat!

Because we are far more vunerable!! If i was in a car with stereo on and didn't hear the car coming from the right, and pulled out on my green light, it would have smashed into me, might be injured, but seat belt, air bags and crush zone would probably have saved me. On Motorbike, maybe not so good. Thankfully was on cycle with no earphones so heard him well before seeing and stopped, and am still alive. Would I have heard if I had earphones? I think not.......

I would always advise against listening to music while on roads, but each to their own.
Bit like helmet debate, some will have an incident that swings them in one persuation.

I would never use headphones on the bike unless perhaps I was off road. Quite simply I find that hearing is enormously important to know what's going on. Drivers and motorcylists are insulated against sound anyway, drivers in their metal/glass capsules and motorcyclists with chunky helmets. As for a speakers on the bars, be my guest but as someone has pointed out, at anything above 16 or 17mph in heavy traffic in London, all you hear are car engines and wind noise so a little speaker would be ineffective

Quite a lot of the anti-headphone types on here, and in real life, seem to substitute hearing for looking. That is an incredibly bad strategy - and it's easy to see on the roads. Riders who don't look back before negotiating their manouvres, and there seem to be thousands of them out there. It's called a life saver check for a reason, after all.

Hearing is a useful secondary sense, but that's all it is. Headphones and music don't stop [1] you from hearing other traffic, how impatient the driver behind you is, or from hearing emergency services long before everyone else around you does.

[1] Well, unless you have the music waaay too loud, have noise-cancelling earphones, or ones that block outside noise.

I don't think anyone is arguing that it's you use EITHER your eyes OR your ears, you use both, one of which is handicapped to some extent by headphones. Simple as that.

The evidence is to the contrary though. Too many people aren't using their eyes nearly enough, and it's very obvious from the riding quality out there, and the debate on here.

Why are headphones out? I always listen to my ipod when I'm commuting to work and see nothing wrong with it. On the other hand, I would have a real problem riding along with music blaring out of a loudspeaker

lets not get into this

I wear earphones and I'm fine with it, some people don't and that's their call. I find it more pleasant than the constant drone of traffic

I was hoping this would be about type of music listened to on the bike

In terms of Metal I like to listen to a few Rammstein tunes

Naturally Prodigy and Pendulum work well for off roading or motivating yourself a bit.

today I was listening to Bloodhound gang Laughing

normally it's more Clutch, Scissorfight, Orange Goblin, Kyuss kinda thing or whatever gig I have coming up

Generally a bit fast paced and heavy yes

I really don't care for Pendulum, they're a poor mans Pitchshifter (I guess that's a recommendation northstar)

Fair enough, they are a bit chalk and cheese but they do what they do well, mixing electronic and rock.

Will check out out pitchshifter, thanks.

try www.pitchshifter.com or deviant, their earlier stuff is more industrial, but if you like early Rammstein you might like Infotainment as well.

Wallace, don't worry, it's more niche than new.. I'm off to see Deep Purple on Sunday...
