By a sodding pedestrian.
I was barreling down a slight hill about 30mph when two little boys run across the road right in front of me, without looking.
THWUMP straight into one, I go down really hard on my left hip, shoulder, elbow (?!?!) and my hands (hurts even through winter gloves)
The little scrote jumps up (somehow!) and he & his mate leg it.
I'm left lying in the road - I couldn't even move for a few minutes, my leg was fooking hurting so much.
A few people stop and had seen what had happened and help me & my bike to the side of the road.
Spent from 6pm in A&E and I'm now at home with a weeks supply of various non-sticky dressings and the like.
Bike isn't so good perhaps. Haven't properly looked yet. I phoned the wife and she picked me up and we dumped it in the car. Mrs Snellgrove tells me the left shifter is buggered, but I'll have to see. I'm just worried lots about the carbon frame
My Assos Airprotecs have a lovely hole in the left hip now, my 2-day old Castelli jersey / jacket may well have some damage too total is about £350 on clothing, so I'm absolutely fuming about that. All because some grotty little scrote didn't look at the road before he ran out.
He's so lucky I wasn't a car, hope the little fark at least learns something wanker.

Sorry to hear, not the best at all....
Speedy recovery. At least you can write about it!!
And to be fair, was better than a car hitting you from the side.

Oh not nice! I hope the little bugger wakes up with all kinds of bruises in the morning.
Hope you mend soon.

He will tell his parents a heavily edited version which will add to their prejudices against "lycra louts" who "mowed down my innocent baby"

This is a common occurrence for me as I cycle through Wallsend in Newcastle. The amount of people who just step off the kerb without looking is amazing. They can be two or three steps on the road before they look right. I can only imagine that they are listening for the noise of the car as they certainly don't make any visual contact before hand. I'm surprised that all these noiseless electric hybrid don't have a pile of chavs impaled on their bonnets.

Sounds painful - it still sets my teeth on edge recalling my last off. Hopefully no lasting damage, and wishing you a speedy recovery.
I really hate to say this, but there is an argument that it's not always judicious to barrel full tilt down a hill in damp conditions when there are peds around. Then again you probably now know that!

I came very close to hitting ped last night on New Kings Road, just after the railway bridge. He stepped out into the cycle lane to ask the cab stuck in traffic if he was free.
Fortunately I was able to screech to a halt about 6 inches from him. It was only when I was stationary that he noticed me and got the shock of his life. He was very appologetic though.
Hope you're ok and you can claim insurance for the kit.

If there's truth in the ''safety in numbers'' theory, perhaps the same would apply to kids playing on or near streets - the more they do it, the more traffic (and children) would be aware of the dangers. Or should they always be accompanied by their parents to a walled-in security-patrolled H&S-sanctioned playground? Or locked up in their bedrooms with their thumbs permanently wrapped around a console?
I was surprised at the amount of anti-child invective on this thread. Weren't we all kids once?
That said, my sympathies to you, snellgrove. Apart from the pain, your accident just cost more money than my bike is worth! Double ouch.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Sucks that this happens to so many people (in varying ways) I think I'm lucky I didn't get hit by a car or something heavier but hitting the tarmac is always the same I suppose.
I think I hurt more today than yesterday. neck and shoulder both have lost a lot of their range of motion and obviously my hip is very sore but the stinging / road-rash feeling is gone which is nice, just the dull ache & general soreness left. That'll take a while!
When I wrote that post I was pretty pissed off (still am, really but I don't feel emotionally angry anymore!) but yes, we were all kids once and boys-will-be-boys. I'm sure I ran across a few roads without looking properly & my Mum no doubt told me off for it. I guess you don't realise how dangerous life is when you're that age. Doesn't give them an excuse though - If I had been in a car, I'd have to live with running a kid over for example, and that kid may well have been dead. Luckily for him & myself, I wasn't and I just have some financial leftovers as well as not being able to walk very well at the moment - which insane person invented stairs btw, they're evil !!
I've checked my 2-day old Castelli jacket and it's got a sodding hole in it. The seam near the shoulder bust right open and it's looking a bit knackered The base layer I was wearing underneath has a few marks but it's not gone through, so Im not too worried (again, the base layer was about a week old !! - why does this happen to you in your nicest kit?!)
Once the Mrs gets back from work I may stuff myself full of ibuprofen and hobble out to inspect the bike (it's still in her car) with the camera.. here's hoping it's not too bad.
Do you think a Carbon frame should be inspected after a big off? I know they can catastrophically fail without warning after being subjected to crashes etc, and I'm a bit concerned - don't want it to 'randomly' fail next time I'm doing 25 or something.
