Can I replace my 1980s stylee BB with a modern BB

Often. I presume you mean cartridge type BB's
Check the width of your BB shell 68mm is English 70 Italian. An English BB has a left and a right hand thread Italian R/H thread only.

Sure can. English or Italian is what you need to worry about. They're 2 different thread types.

Yep, no problems. Measure it yourself and buy online, or take it to your LBS and see what they have.

www.velosolo.co.uk has lots of BBs that suit steel frames with JIS or ISO square tapers so you can use your original chainset

Cheers, it's a 68-122.5mm English BB. Is the square taper standard i.e. will it fit my old TA cranks?
