Hearing is a useful secondary sense, but that's all it is. Headphones and music don't stop [1] you from hearing other traffic, how impatient the driver behind you is, or from hearing emergency services long before everyone else around you does.
[1] Well, unless you have the music waaay too loud, have noise-cancelling earphones, or ones that block outside noise. |
Again +1. Do people seriously think that us headphone wearers would use them if we couldn't hear traffic or felt they made us unsafe? Been using them for years now with no trouble at all.

Will check out out pitchshifter, thanks. |
try www.pitchshifter.com or deviant, their earlier stuff is more industrial, but if you like early Rammstein you might like Infotainment as well.
Wallace, don't worry, it's more niche than new.. I'm off to see Deep Purple on Sunday... |
God, I'd forgotten that Pitchshifter existed, lost them when I dumped my tape collection in a box and never got it out again, Spotify here I come.
Oh and CP, what is the line up of Deep Purple this week?
I saw them a few years ago sans Blackmore but with Lord, Paice,Glover and most importantly Gillan, they rocked.

The evidence is to the contrary though. Too many people aren't using their eyes nearly enough, and it's very obvious from the riding quality out there, and the debate on here. |

Really?
I think Headhuunter has a point
Mikey is making an assumption and generalising about all of us. Yes I shoulder check often, my eyes are my primary tool for cycling, but ears are important too, headphones or not.
EDIT, I put a comma in the wrong place

Slipstreamz would seem to be the answer you're looking for.
I don't listen to music whilst I ride, though.

CTUK's line is that if you *need* your hearing, then you aren't looking enough. There are plenty of situations where I can't hear anything useful, with or without headphones. Situations like being near a vehicle with a noisy engine, or at over 20mph due to wind noise.

Look good.
I don't listen to music atm but I agree with mikey most of the time I can't hear anything because of wind noise I wouldn't wear my sure headphones though, can't hear anything but the music in those.

Another thing to consider...
I have tried both open and closed style headphones and this makes a big difference. The open style (where you still hear most of what's going on around you) i found much more prefereble to the closed style (where the outside world goes very quiet).
I reckon dance music is ideal for cycling by the way.

Gah, you're missing the point.
If a car has 5 gears you could use it perfectly safely with 4, but it's generally accepted that using the fifth gear is a better thing to do (A rubbish analogy, but you get the idea I hope)

My music battery ran out last night so I tried without headphones.
As some have said, I realised just how much I use my vision when I've got music in. Without it I found that I did a little of what pedestrians do just before they walk out in front of you - use their ears to check for cars. It means I'm constantly checking over my shoulder for traffic which works quite well.
I also find that the slight isolation from the traffic noise makes me more confident and comfortable in my riding.
It also makes me cycle faster.

This is also why I wear mine too but I did hear when a guy in a flat bed 4x4 put his foot down to make me jump even as he was coming up to a red light.
I did ask him what that was about but got a nothing mate

Radio 2 on the way to work, 106.1 Rock Radio on the way home. Unfortunatley, even on full volume, I can barely makeout Wogans quips over the roaring rushour traffic on the A56. Naff Nokia headphones...

I dont have a strong feeling against riding with headphones - I have but mostly I dont.
I can understand that riding with headphones might heighten your visual awareness and recognise that looking is better than listening when you're on a bike (although a combination of both is better still in my view).
I struggle though with the idea that you can have headphones on at such a volume that you can hear all that you need to hear and still get anything out of having the music playing. I suspect that those who do listen to music have it at such a volume that they miss some of the significant sound that those riding without music hear. Does this mean that they are in mortal danger? No. Does this mean that they are less aware of their surroundings than someone who both looks and hears? I think yes.
