Can anyone help..
I am looking at getting an Orange 5 frame only and transferring all the parts from my current bike onto the frame. The forks I have are RS Recon 351 130mm, which the 2009 Orange 5 S actually came with.
The 2010 Orange 5 also has Recons but travel is up to 140mm, but I read that to compensate, the 2010 head angle has been slackened from 69.5 to 68 dgerees.
Now in time, I'd probably get a 140mm fork but can't afford that and the frame all att he same time, so in teh meantime I'd probably have to run the 2010 68 degree frame with 130mm forks.
So the question is, what would be the difference in feel between the 68 degree head angle with 130mm forks compared to last year's 69.5 degree angle with 130mm forks?
Or should I just buy the Giant Trance X1 frame I was originally considering??? Head ( and wallet) say Giant, heart says Orange!!
Thanks

That's roughly what I thought.
Given that it'll be only for a few months, do you think it'll be "fun" as in unrideable/ dangerous/ just plain crap or that it wouldn't be a huge difference?

Yeah but how can I test a 2010 frame with the 130mm fork without actually building the bike?

Contact Orange - they loan out test machines, and you can simulate it with more sag on the air fork. 10mm is not that much difference, half a degree at most in angle change.

Orange 5 are adjusted for 140mm forks anyway and have been since 2005. Infact the 130mm Recons you mention had a 508mm axle to crown, the 140mm Fox options all had 510mm axle to crown. The forks were virtually the same height.
I'm not sure how long the new Recons are but it's certainly not going to change the geometry that much.
The Orange 5 website lists the 2010 head angle to be 67, the same as the 2009 one (also on there). Are you sure there has been a change?

I wonder if they actually have changed the head angle that much? It's quite a hulking change to virtually go unnoticed. I do wonder sometimes.
Bike companies need to learn from the shampoo industry when it comes to self improvement. The new frame could be enriched with anti-crashitides and a soothing gnarlonium.
Actually, if 'gnarlonium' doesn't exist I'd like to patent it now please. I'll just be 6061, we'll sell loads though.

So in summary, 130mm instead of 140mm won't make a big difference. At worst, slightly more twitchy up front?
Slight hint of cynicism about MBR always awarding Orange 5 10/10, I'm detecting.
So if were you guys, would you go for a Trance X1 instead and save £270?
Or indeed is there another 5" travel bike for around the same money that you would recommend that is available frame only?

Slight difference - still won't be as twitchy as the older model with even longer forks. But stem length and weight distribution has effects also.
Frame only always works out very expensive, especially when you can get full builds for the same price nearly. For instance a whole Trance for a grand here! OK, shock is not as good, but could easily buy the RP23 just by selling a couple of bits.

Lots of 120-140mm bikes out there, not so many frame only.

Indeed, but I think we're both quite bitter and twisted. 5 years ago the Orange was pretty overpriced, due to the switch around in the market I actually think it's pretty good value now (in the scale of boutique bikes). Very low-tech but fun to ride, everything is easy to maintain and seem to last very well, there are still a lot of pre 2003 Sub 5s floating around.
You'll also get stacks more back if you decide to sell this one, they hold their value very well.

The Trance X is quite a different beast, the Orange is quite slack and plush, the Trance is quite upright, efficient and rigid. It's down to personal preferance really.
I actually bought a Trance X off here only yesterday (cheers Naveed! ) so I'll have a slightly more rounded opinion in a few months with any luck. I was after a comfy but light frame for endurance racing in the summer, and that frame is certainly silly light.
