+1 for Susan Boyle though. She really can sing. And you can't beat a big voice from the valleys....... |
Why have you chosen at least three female singers (Goldfrapp, Harry, Manson) who sing interesting songs, sure, but are capable of, at best, holding a tune? And the nonsense about singers having to write their own stuff - why, for the love of god? Give me one good reason, one justification for a song being "better" because the dude who wrote it, sung it.

Yeah, I'm with you there Blondie, those ladies would struggle in the 'diva' area because that just ain't their style, and we are talking divas here. However, they do have their own musical merit.
I can sympathise with the 'they wrote it themselves and are therefore better' feeling, but being able to write a song doesn't make you a better singer.
However, I can't agree with anyone who thinks Susan Boyle is a 'great' singer. She's a big fish in a small talent pond on BGT, but line her up with some proper singers (like Katherine Jenkins) and she'd pale into insignificance. I'm so glad she didn't win that show.

If its female vocalists generally, give me Tanya Donelly, Hope Sandoval, Marcy Mays. if we're sticking to X Factor, Leona and Alex have powerful voices if you like that sort of thing. Susan Boyle is a second rate Elaine Page and only generates any interest because she doesn't look how the BGT watching public think somebody with a nice voice should look (?). Stacey seems pretty mediocre, and am I the only person who doesn't feel the need to "bless" her purely for coming across as thick as two short planks? What is it with this country??!

I can't stand X idolpopgetmeoutofcelebrityfactorwhatever - mainly because i find the whole thing dull dull dull and really dislike most of the music involved. I don't have a problem with the whole singer/songwriter thing but I do get annoyed with the fact that there's no room in this format to encourage young songwriters or musicians. It's a sad reflection of the music industry that music is increasingly bought on the basis of celebrity rather than talent. I seriously doubt that any of the winners will stand the test of time. I do however admire Cowell; he basically gets to fleece stupid people for millions and get paid for it to boot.

+1 grudging admiration for Cowell the stupid people are both, those that enter into contracts with him and those that buy the subsequent aural faeces that plop out of the end of the Cowell conveyor belt

Oi!
If I like the music (I mostly don't) is that such a bad thing?
skellator3, honestly, would you say no?

I would certainly say "no thank you" (although it's an utterly misogynistic question that assumes that she would be pleading with me for a bit of how's your father in the first place)

That's a little bit serious for what was just a tongue-in-cheek question.
Edit: Given that western society has built itself on sexualising women, companies have made millions on images of extremely pretty women dressed in extremely little clothing. I refuse to believe that there is a straight man out there that has never asked himself or another man "would you"?
Similarly I never thought "would you" could be described as misogynistic.

Well, I like them. I'll agree to disagree. What I actually said was 'I'd rather hear people actually capable of writing some of their own material, and giving it some real depth and emotion rather than just hitting high notes'. Songwriting is not essential, I'll agree- Peggy Lee didn't write 'Fever', Cash didn't write 'A Boy Named Sue' (though he did write plenty), Shirley Bassey's always had stuff written for her- but the depth and emotion bit, to my mind, is. A lot of these 'popular' singers just don't have it. They might as well be reading from a phone book (metaphorically). On the other hand, lots of the great frontmen and women are poor if not downright awful at holding a tune. Do I care? Nope.

I think that the "don't write their own stuff" criticism is a proxy for the real issue - the "production line, image over substance" singers rolled out by these shows. I'm sure we can all come up with many great artists who sang other peoples stuff.
