As part of my decison process about new wheels in a recent thread, I emailed Hope about the reported issue with using a cassette without an alloy carrier on the Pro 2 hub. I have a Deore cassette which does not need changing yet.

To my surprise I got a phone call to my work phone (always gets put on my email footer) 5 minutes after sending the email
The chap explained that as long as it has a carrier (not separate sprockets) and is done up tight then there shouldn't be an issue. They specify alloy carriers as these aparently cause less damage when they are only nipped up and not done up tight. Basically covering themselves.

Bloody impressive response though, normally you email tech suppot or customer service for compnaies and you are lucky if you ever get a reply Got to admire them on that

Just though it might be usefull info.

My wife wants to put a rack on her mountainbike (old rigid Ridgeback). It is a 15" frame, as a result there are no fixing points for a 'standard' rack at the top of the seatstays. There is a full compliment of mounting eyelets located at the bottom of the seatstays near the dropouts.

Which racks should fit her frame? Or do I just need to purchase an extra fixing kit?

Are the i-beam style racks any good? Can they take a decent load or are they more of a lightweight solution?

Ta in advance
Apparently there was a bit of a mix up, anyway bottom line as it stands is no added weight / different tapering and there's been no major reported change in riding characteristics. SSTom i'll pm you later with the detail (if you are looking in). Hoathy, I imagine Stuart has sent the same email but if you want to compare notes pm me and I'll send you the detail I got. .

Shoes and a jacket are both good presents, you can buy the cleats, they're not too dear.

I'm new to this cx lark, but 3 races and 0 hours fettling. I also use it as my winter bike.

I'm gobsmacked! Don't you find that your cassette & gears are clogged with mud and grass? Your chain is bone dry, and your brake blocks are crusted? Here is a breakdown of my usual activity.

pre race:
1. Remove Mudguards
2. Remove Bottle Cages
3. Swap cassette onto CX wheels
4. Fit CX wheels

Post Race
1. Power spray bike
2. Give bike closer clean with hot soapy water (sepcial attention to brakes and gears)
3. Remove wheels and clean out gears and wipe chain clean with a dry cloth
4. Remove cassette and clean out mud and fit to road wheels
5. Fit road wheels to bike
6. Fit mudguards and cages
7. Lubricate all moving parts

Mattbass789 - Couldn't agree more! It is so frustrating when you HAVE to do it.

I reckon this week is particularly bad because I used two bikes and buggered my MTB. its my own fault because I tend to neglect the MTB and focus all my loving attention ont he road bikes. lesson learned....

Pregant wife is helping me in the pits - she is pretty good at it too! I just get funny looks when i let her carry the spare bike and cleaning brushes

I reckon I would happily pay a few quid for someone to hose the bike down at the end of the race!

as long as you've got a wide one it should be okay... Worse comes to it write off the alloy one and then buy a steel. If it doesn't write off the alloy then you're fine!

In the event of a ride incident, make sure you're using a kit with lots of small spacers then move the chainring to the outside and move the sprocket out for chainline.
