Suspension and brake advice

Postby Mr V » Wed Oct 03, 2012 19:15 pm

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and am looking for some advice.

I bought a (unused) 2009 Marin Madrone trail off a work colleague about a year ago.
I took it out once last year for a quick spin but haven't used it since.
Anyway a friend of mine has decided to get a bike so we can go trail riding.

To cut a long story short I want to upgrade the forks and
Put hydraulics on it. I'll spend around £200 on the fork and £1-150 on the hydraulics
What would you guys recommend either new or second hand and what should I be looking to buy?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks. Mr V

What brakes do you currently run?

For the fork:

Or in coil spring can be had for about £115.

For the brakes:

or

With the former you will need rotors and mounts, though you can probably use what you already have (though with that Recon fork, with a 160mm rotor both brakes bolt on minus an adaptor).

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully that should get me started.
Looking forward to getting out on some good trails.

I'm loving my Bengal Helix 3 so far @ £65 the set but yet i have a set of deore SLX with adjusters and Deore LX calipers i find them a tad spongey but that seems to be just me.. other than that, they are great brakes.

Or get something used from the Calssifieds for a lot less....

By the way the brakes stop you breaking (yourself).

I've found some RS Recon gold 2012 for £180 & am now looking at the elixir 5 with 160mm rotors but as am unsure if all this kit will fit. My last bike had cantilever brakes so am really unsure.

Any help would be much appreciated again.

You say you have a budget of £350 for forks and brakes? You could get a set of 2012 Reba RL's and a set of 2013 SLX brakes for that

...if you don't mind waiting as the £235 Reba is showing out of stock atm.
