Stumpjumper refurb & rebuild

Postby ry1978 » Wed Jul 18, 2012 21:24 pm

I thought I would chronicle the refurbishment and rebuild of a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR frame I picked up on Ebay. I've been working on it for about a month now so I'll start uploading the progress pics for anyone who is interested!

The frame was sound but in need of a respray and new decals so I stripped, degreased, masked bearing faces etc. and rubbed it down before priming. I wanted to do the whole job myself so I went for spray paints rather than powder coating.

I used a couple of coats of primer, a couple of top coat metallic and a couple of gloss lacquer (applied after the decals).

I made the decals myself using some software and a vinyl cutter from work...

I have been using parts from around my garage along with bits and pieces sourced from the forum and Ebay. Time to start building her up, I'm going for a 'do it all' kind of build while trying to keep a relatively tight budget (new baby arrived 2 weeks ago!)

Anyway, The baby's crying so I'll add some more pics when I can do some more assembly!

Looks like a pretty good paint finish for a rattle can job!

Would have preferred to do it with an original decal set, not a fan of the fake S-Works decal myself.

Looks very smart, I have a similar frame which I am looking into rebuilding so it is going to be interesting to see how it goes and what sort of spec you put on.
by the way was your frame anodized ?

Thanks for the comments, I'm really pleased with the finish of the paint.

Cannondalerambo, I think the Frame was a painted finish originally before I rubbed it down?

Raceface gt, im going to refurb the cannondale in the background once I'm done with the stumpjumper. I think I'll build the 'Dale in a lighter XC style while the stumpjumper will be my all-rounder with less emphasis on weight saving and more on comfort and control!

A few more parts are ready to put on now so I'll get some pictures up this weekend, hopefully.

forks and headset are now fitted...

I've also fitted a raceface double + bash guard and some Shimano DX flat pedals.

I'm thinking of getting rid of the white bars, I don't think I like them!

A little more progress...

I need to get some gear cables, chain and the rear shock needs to be properly mounted with the correct bushes. Once I can get a test ride in I can fine tune the spec!

Cheers,
The mudguard weighs next to nothing and fits with a couple of zip ties. The one on my stumpjumper is designed to fit an Enduro so needed a little modification with a sharp blade and a small drill bit.

Great job, bike looks awesome. Have you added up how much money you have saved compared to if you had bought one new? Stickers you made look bloody good

I should be getting the shock back from mojo today so I will finally be able to ride it! I reckon I've spent about £500 so far (including rear shock service) plus some parts I had lying around the garage.

I'll get some pictures up after I have given it it's first test ride (today hopefully!)

They're shock protectors rather than true mud guards, they do nothing for you.

Y'know what's lighter than a carbon mudguard though (which sounds crazy!)? No mudguard!

Looks awesome!

When I get more time, maybe one day I'll build my own bike, must be a great learning curve.

The bikes had a few outings now and it rides brilliantly! Took a few pictures around Rivington last week...

And the stumpy after a clean down...

I think I want to put a reverb on next, the interrupted seat tube makes dropping a normal post virtually impossible! I'm also considering a bigger, stickier tyre on the front, the trails are getting a bit slippy at this time of year, maybe a shwalbe hans dampf?
