I dont know what to advise but if you want a good fork then start with that and work up. Look at the bikes that have the kind of forks you want. Rockshox will probably offer the best VFM so you are probably looking at something like the Reba for XC or the Revelation for trails and AM.

You mention Trek 6 series so i am deducing you want XC.

The first thing that springs to my mind is the Boarman Pro. It comes in around the £500 mark second hand and has a really great spec for the money.

After that, its anyones guess!

Perhaps if you were more specific about what you want, as others have said it would be better? Look at the bike reviews here and find something you like and then perhaps ask about something within budget that comes close?

Thats the best i can suggest.

Nice - I didn't notice that initially.

Stay on topic from now on.

The Rockrider 8.1 is as good as it gets for £500, and has a great fork too. Many bikes second hand will not be as good as this, so I would at least go and see one in the flesh.

good ones can be found, but what they eventually go for and if they are the right size or not is another thing http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Trek-6900-/26 ... 3ccc78b04b
