Trek Madone Internal brake cable routing problem

Postby maringirl » Mon Nov 05, 2012 16:32 pm

Replacing brake cable on Trek Madone - left the outer casing in place in the (mistaken) assumption that it was a single piece of outer going through to the other end and would be a doddle. It isn't - there are two separate pieces of outer going into the guide at each end. Try as I might I cannot get the inner wire to find the hole in the guide at the back end - it is just disapparing into the frame. Any tips?

Try taking the outer cable and guide out of the frame. Remove everything you can to make the hole as large as possible. You can put this all back in once you have got the inner cable in place. I did the same on a Klein, but once i had removed the outer, the hole was quite large and i could easily feed the inner cable through. Get a brand new inner with no kinks, hang the frame up so that the inner will fall straight down. Bit fiddly, but good luck.

There is also some informtion and advice in the manual

Thanks for the link - I had kind of worked out that the guide at the back end had to be the way in as it is impossible to send a waggly cable through and get it through a 1.6mm hole without being able to see! I just need to get a tiny allen key (2mm) for the screw that holds the guide on the 2009 model we have - the 2010 one seems to have a chunkier 5mm one. This little one on ours looks very easy to round off!!! Cheers for help.

If you have not done it yet you could try a piece of thread and a hoover.

Once you have sucked the thread through you can use it as a draw cord for the rest.

Got it sorted thanks - the guide bracket screw required a tiny 2mm torx key - it was very corroded but undid after a bit of gentle coaxing. Phew! Back in with plenty of grease on thread and not done up so tight.
